Iva Jovic, an emerging 18-year-old American talent, faces four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the third round of the French Open. While Osaka brings experience and previous major wins, her record at Roland Garros has been mixed, with third-round exits in each attempt. Jovic, meanwhile, has rapidly adapted her game to clay, highlighted by impressive results this season. The key takeaway: Jovic’s style and recent form on clay give her the edge to advance further, despite Osaka’s credentials.

Jovic Keeps Breakthrough Season Rolling

Iva Jovic pulled off one of the biggest results of the tournament so far, beating recent Strasbourg champion Emma Navarro 6-0, 6-3 to reach the third round at Roland Garros. Earlier in the week, she also defeated Alexandra Eala in straight sets.

This is Jovic's best result at the French Open, having exited in the second round on her only previous appearance last year. The run comes at the right time after a disappointing first-round loss in Strasbourg.

The 18-year-old had almost no experience at tour level on clay before this season and had won only two matches on the surface. Since then, she has reached the semifinals in Charleston and the third round in Rome, adapting quickly to clay-court tennis.

Apart from a few early exits during the American hard-court swing, Jovic has put together a strong season. Those results helped her break into the Top 20 for the first time, and she has carried that level into the clay season.

She also enjoyed a major breakthrough at the Australian Open earlier this year, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to Aryna Sabalenka. That remains the best Grand Slam result of her career and gives her plenty to draw from heading into the second week.

Osaka Moves Closer to Paris Breakthrough

Naomi Osaka moved into the third round with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Donna Vekic. Osaka trailed by a break on two occasions in the opening set but recovered both times before taking control of the match.

The Japanese star is now chasing her best result at Roland Garros. In eight previous appearances, she reached the third round only three times, with each of those runs ending at this stage. Her most recent third-round defeat in Paris came against Katerina Siniakova in 2019.

Osaka arrived in Paris after encouraging runs in Madrid and Rome, reaching the fourth round at both events. Those results marked some of her best clay-court performances in recent years.

The results were particularly important given her limited schedule. Recurring abdominal issues restricted her tournament appearances, and she also spent a month away from competition before returning for the clay season.

Osaka holds a 7-13 record in Grand Slam third-round matches. Since 2021, she has progressed beyond this stage only once, during her semifinal run at the US Open last year.

Verdict

Both players have produced solid results on clay this season, but Iva Jovic’s game appears better suited to the surface. Her recent performances have been more convincing overall, which gives her the edge over Naomi Osaka in this clash.
