Amanda Anisimova aims to build on recent momentum as she prepares to face Jessica Pegula in the Australian Open quarterfinals. Anisimova has shown impressive form, reaching finals in recent Grand Slams and has overcome a consistent quarterfinal barrier at Melbourne. Pegula, on the other hand, faces a challenge breaking through her history of quarterfinal losses outside the US. Although Pegula leads in head-to-head encounters at 3-0, Anisimova’s big-match form positions her as a strong contender, signaling a potential breakthrough in Melbourne.

Amanda Anisimova has been playing the tennis of her life in recent months, reaching the final at each of the last two Grand Slams. I expect her to carry that momentum forward here, overcome compatriot Jessica Pegula, and book a place in the semifinals.

Stats - Pegula’s Quarterfinal Barrier vs Anisimova’s Big-Match Form

  • Jessica Pegula has lost all five Slam quarterfinals outside the US Open.
  • She is 28–3 vs American players since the 2023 US Open.
  • Amanda Anisimova is 3–1 in Slam quarterfinals.
  • She has won eight of her last 12 matches vs top-10 players.

HTH - Jessica Pegula leads 3-0

Year Event Surface Round Winner Score
2024 Toronto WTA Hard F Jessica Pegula 6-3, 2-6, 6-1

2020 Cincinnati Masters (New York) Hard 2R Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2

Pegula Through, Test Awaits

Jessica Pegula halted Madison Keys’ title defense with a controlled 6-3, 6-4 win to reach the Australian Open quarterfinals for the fourth time.

Her draw has been kind, facing two players outside the top 100 and an out-of-form McCartney Kessler. Pegula has won all four matches in straight sets, rarely dropping games.

She brings momentum from late 2025, highlighted by semifinal runs at the US Open, Beijing and the WTA Finals, plus a final in Wuhan.

Still, Grand Slam quarterfinals remain a hurdle away from home, with Pegula yet to win one outside the US, including three losses in Melbourne.

Anisimova Overcomes Melbourne Barrier

Amanda Anisimova reached her first Australian Open quarterfinal with a 7-6, 6-4 win over Xinyu Wang, surviving a first-set tiebreak before taking control.

The victory snapped her three-match losing streak in fourth-round matches at the Australian Open.

Anisimova enjoyed a major breakthrough last season, reaching five of her nine career finals, including Wimbledon and the US Open, and rising to a career-high No. 3.

This is her fifth Grand Slam quarterfinal, and she has won three of the previous four, while holding a strong 6-1 record against fellow Americans at majors.

Player Quotes

"I've been playing really well, seeing the ball really well, hitting the ball really well this whole tournament, and I wanted to stay true to that and lean on a couple of things that I felt like she would do," Pegula said after the win against Madison Keys.

"I've been honestly enjoying every second out there. I feel like I'm handling, like, the pressure and expectation that I'm trying to not really think about, but I think that just means a lot more to me that I've been able to really handle that well this week." Anisimova said after reaching the quarterfinal.

Verdict

The balance of this matchup leans toward Anisimova. Her level in big events over the past year has been excellent, and this shapes up as the spot where she finally breaks through and earns her first win over Pegula.
