Elena Rybakina, the world No. 2 and 2022 Wimbledon champion, is set to face Elise Mertens in the Wimbledon third round. Rybakina boasts a dominant 7-1 head-to-head record, superior grass-court form, and a stellar 2024, with multiple titles and deep Grand Slam runs. Mertens, though dependable in early rounds, has struggled to maintain momentum and rarely wins against top-10 opposition at majors. The analysis gives Rybakina the clear advantage, expecting her to advance further at Wimbledon.

Belgian Eyes Rare Deep Run

Elise Mertens recovered from a set down to defeat Maria Timofeeva 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 and reach the third round at Wimbledon. Earlier in the week, she opened her campaign with a comfortable straight-set victory over Laura Siegemund.

This is only the second time since February that Mertens has won multiple matches in a tournament and just the fourth such occasion this season, highlighting her struggles to build momentum in recent months.

Apart from her fourth-round run at the Australian Open, the Belgian has failed to win more than two main-draw matches at any other event this year.

Mertens has reached the third round at Wimbledon five times and has progressed on three of those occasions. She has won her last two matches at this stage and will be aiming to extend that streak this week.

Rybakina Raises Her Level

After a shaky opening-round performance against Lois Boisson, Elena Rybakina produced a dominant display to defeat Caty McNally 6-1, 6-2 and reach the third round. She saved all three break points she faced and converted four of the 10 break opportunities she created.

This is Rybakina's sixth consecutive appearance in the third round at Wimbledon. Apart from her defeat to Clara Tauson last year, she has won all of her other matches at this stage, including during her title-winning run in 2022.

The Kazakh has continued her impressive season by reaching eight quarterfinals or better, highlighted by titles at the Australian Open and Stuttgart. Those results helped her climb to a career-high ranking of No. 2.

Overall, Rybakina owns an 11-5 career record in third-round matches at Grand Slams, winning six of her last seven matches at this stage.

Verdict

Elise Mertens has been reliable in the opening rounds of tournaments, but she has struggled to build on those starts, particularly in recent months. Elena Rybakina, meanwhile, has maintained a high level throughout the season despite a couple of recent early exits. With her stronger grass-court game and consistent results at Wimbledon, Rybakina looks well placed to progress to the fourth round.
