Geelong Cats vs Collingwood Magpies Preview
It shapes as another thrilling MCG blockbuster when Geelong take on Collingwood on Saturday night with the Cats set to scrape through in a tight one.
The two sides have featured in plenty of tight contestst in recent times and there is plenty at play with little separating either side in their respective win-loss records so far this season.
Geelong advanced to 5-3 last weekend with a 49-point win over North Melbourne, while Collingwood are 4-3 and a draw after splitting the points with Hawthorn last weekend with the two sides locked on 93 points apiece at the end of full time.
Geelong’s will look to control the game through structure and adapt when things aren’t going their way. They were challenged for long periods last week before breaking the game open late and with Bailey Smith, Max Holmes and their midfield group able to rotate and impact in different phases, the Cats can shift the game on their terms when it matters most.
Collingwood, however, will ensure this is anything but straightforward. Their defensive resilience was on full display last week, absorbing a heavy inside 50 count and still managing to stay in the contest through efficiency and composure.
Darcy Moore and their back six hold up well under pressure, while Nick Daicos continues to drive their ball movement and Jamie Elliott provides a dangerous outlet when they transition quickly.
The key difference in this matchup is Geelong’s ability to generate scoring from a wider range of avenues. Jeremy Cameron is in outstanding form and demands constant attention, while the likes of Jack Martin and the supporting forwards can capitalise when the ball hits the ground. Against a Collingwood side that prefers to defend deep and force low-percentage shots, Geelong’s patience and method going inside 50 will be crucial.
Expect a tight, contested game with both sides cancelling each other out for long periods. Take Geelong in a close one, with the total points under in play given both sides’ defensive strengths. Bailey Smith looms as a strong play for 30+ disposals, while Jack Martin is a sneaky option for 2+ goals.
- Geelong have won seven of the past eight between the two sides.
- The past seven head to heads have been decided by 24 points or less.
- Jack Martin booted two goals last week and has kicked five in his past two against Collingwood are conceding an average of just 77 points per game.
- Collingwood rank #1 for fewest points conceded in 2026
