Port Adelaide vs Western Bulldogs Tips - Bulldogs to bite back and snap losing streak

The upcoming clash between Port Adelaide Power and Western Bulldogs promises a close, low-scoring AFL battle. Port’s strong defense may keep the game tight, but the Bulldogs’ midfield dominance—led by Marcus Bontempelli—could prove the difference late. While Port’s recent form is steady, their inability to generate high scores may hurt them. The key recommendation: take the Bulldogs head-to-head, look for the total points under, and consider Bontempelli for 2+ goals as a strong prop bet.

Port Adelaide Power vs Western Bulldogs Preview

The Western Bulldogs will snap a four-game losing streak with a tight win over a rejuvenated Port Adelaide side when the two teams clash on Friday night.

This shapes as a genuine arm wrestle, with Port Adelaide’s defensive structure and ability to absorb pressure keeping the game tight for long periods.

The Power have shown they can handle heavy inside 50 counts — conceding 59 last week and still nearly winning — with Aliir Aliir intercepting everything in the air and their back six holding up under sustained pressure.

However, the Bulldogs have the midfield class to eventually break through. Marcus Bontempelli continues to drive them forward with his ability to impact both at stoppage and on the scoreboard.

Even in defeat last week, the Dogs were able to generate scoring opportunities and control parts of the game, particularly when they moved the ball quickly and created chaos inside 50. That style is what troubles Port Adelaide most — not slow build-up, but repeat entries and ground-level pressure.

The key battle will be around stoppage and territory. Zak Butters and Ollie Wines will get their hands on the footy and give Port Adelaide first use at times, and Mitch Georgiades’ consistency inside 50 means they don’t need a high volume of entries to stay in the contest.

Expect Port Adelaide to keep the Round 9 clash low-scoring and scrappy, absorbing pressure and staying within striking distance, but the Bulldogs’ midfield class and ability to generate scoreboard impact in bursts should prove the difference late. In a game that could go either way deep into the final quarter, the Dogs have just enough polish to edge out a much-improved Power outfit.

Take the Bulldogs in the head to head in a match where the total points under looks in play, given Port Adelaide’s ability to absorb opposition inside 50. Marcus Bontempelli and Zak Butters are the two obvious plays from a player props point of view.

  • The Western Bulldogs were 90-point winners the last time the two sides met
  • Marcus Bontempelli has kicked 2+ goals in his past two matches and 2+ in his past two against the Power
  • Zak Butters has had 30+ disposals in his past seven matches
  • Port Adelaide’s past five matches have all gone under the total points

Head to Head

Port Adelaide have taken out four of the past five matches between the two sides but the Bulldogs were 90-point winners the last time they met, which was in Round 8 last season at Mars Stadium in Ballarat. The Power have won the past three at the Adelaide Oval.

Notable player performances in the recent head to heads have been from;
  • Zak Butters (Power)- 30+ disposals in three of the last four
  • Adam Treloar (Dogs)- 30+ disposals in three of his last four against Port
  • Marcus Bontempelli (Dogs)- 2+ goals in his past two
  • Tim English (Dogs)- 2+ goals in his past two

Port Adelaide Power Form Analysis

Port Adelaide sit 3-5 and are unlucky not to be 4-4 after losing two of their past three by tight margins, including a one-point loss to Adelaide last weekend as well as a three-point defeat to the Hawls. Those two losses were split by an impressive 30-point win over Geelong, when inaccuracy only preveneted a bigger margin.

The conceded 59 inside 50s to 39 against the Crows but their back six stood up in the 75-76 scoreline and were led by Allir Allir, while they made the most of their opportunities inside forward 50 with Mitch Georgiades booting three goals.

Zak Butters and Ollie Wines both had 30 disposals against the Crows with Butters making it a streak of seven that he has hit the 30+. Georgiades has kicked 2+ goals in every match this season.

Port Adelaide Power Team News

There were no injuries for Port Adelaide to come out of the loss to Adelaide. Esava Ratugolea is edging closer towards a return from a knee injury, while Jack Watkins, Will Brodie, Will Lorenz and Jackson Mead are among a host of player with some solid SANFL form that are pressing for selection.

Western Bulldogs Form Analysis

The Bulldogs flew out of the blocks in 2026 with four straight wins, including a couple of strong performances on the road, but injuries have taken a significant toll in recent weeks.

They were on the end of heavy losses to Sydney, Geelong, and Hawthorn with those coming by an average margin of 60 points before an improved display against Fremantle when only going down late in the match by 12 points.

Marcus Bontempelli led the way with 33 disposals and two goals to follow his return of 29 and two against Sydney, while Bailey Dale had 32 disposals to follow up from his 31 against the Swans.

Despite the re-appearance of Tim English, the Dogs continue to struggle in the hitouts, going down 23-61, leading to a -8 clearance differential. This is an area they will need to improve in to get on top of the Power.

Western Bulldogs Team News

Latham Vandermeer sustained a hamstring injury in the loss to the Dockers and will miss. Oskar Baker is among some of those with solid VFL form and is a possible replacement.

Verdict

Bulldogs in the head to head with the total points under. Bontempelli a strong chance for two goals in a tight one with Butters to continue strong form for Port
