Melbourne Demons vs West Coast Eagles Preview
Melbourne will capitalise on a golden opportunity to cement themselves in the top half of the AFL ladder with a strong win over the West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium on Sunday.
The Demons are currently in 7th spot with a 5-3 win-loss record, separated by percentage only from the 4th placed Brisbane Lions.
They fell short to the Sydney Swans last weekend by 17 points but have had a solid past three weeks with wins over Brisbane and Richmond in that period.
West Coast have fallen away after chalking up two wins earlier this season and hit rock bottom with a Round 8 loss to the previously winless Richmond.
Melbourne’s performance against Sydney was better than the result suggests and highlighted the attacking upside they now possess. They piled on 114 points against the competition’s best defensive side and, outside of a poor second quarter where they lost control of territory and efficiency, the Demons matched it for large periods and showed enough to suggest they can put weaker sides away.
That shapes as a major concern for West Coast, whose defensive issues continue to be exposed. Against Richmond, they conceded heavily from key moments, including contested marks inside 50 and costly errors late and those flaws are unlikely to hold up against a Melbourne side that is far more potent and capable of sustaining pressure across four quarters.
Expect Melbourne to control the
Round 9 fixture through midfield and territory, with their ability to generate inside 50s and scoreboard pressure proving too much. The Demons have multiple avenues to goal and continue to spread the load, which makes them difficult to defend, particularly for a West Coast outfit that is conceding heavily and struggling to contain opposition ball movement.
From a betting perspective, this shapes as a comfortable Melbourne win, with the Demons well placed to cover a 40+ margin. Jacob van Rooyen has a strong record against the Eagles and looms as a key target inside 50 for multiple goals, while Kozzie Pickett’s impact both through the midfield and forward half should translate to strong disposal numbers and scoreboard involvement.
If Melbourne bring the same attacking intent they showed against Sydney, they should put this game to bed early and run away with it.
- Melbourne were 85-point winners over the Eagles at Marvel Stadium in Round 22 last season.
- The Demons are averaging over 100 points per game this season
- Jacob van Rooyen has kicked 2+ goals in each of his past three matches against West Coast.
- Kozzie Pickett has kicked six goals in the past two rounds
Head to Head
Melbourne have won six of the past seven head-to-head meetings and were 85-point winners at Marvel Stadium in the most recent clash, with Bailey Fritsch booting four goals and Christian Salem racking up 30 disposals.
Other notable player performances in the recent head-to-heads have come from;
- Ryan Maric (Eagles) - 25+ disposals in his past two against the Demons
- Jacob van Rooyen (Dees) - 2+ goals in each of his past three against the Eagles
- Brody Mihocek (Dees) - As a former Magpie, 2+ goals in each of his past six against West Coast
- Jake Waterman (Eagles) - 10 goals in his past three against the Dees
Melbourne sit 5-3 and have enjoyed a resurgence under Steven King. Apart from a shock loss in Gather Round against Essendon, Melbourne fans will be happy with the season so far, with a major highlight coming three weeks ago in their two-point win over Brisbane.
Last weekend, they were competitive against the ladder leaders, Sydney, before ultimately falling short in a high-scoring match at the SCG, going down 114-131.
A highlight of their playing style under King has been their scoring, going at over 100 points per game this season, and reaching that mark in six of eight matches. They have found greater avenues to goal in 2026 and had four multiple goalscorers against the Swans and 13 individual goalscorers.
Kozzie Pickett booted another two to go with his 22 disposals, while Koltyn Tholstrup and Ed Langdon also had 22 disposals. The Demons have been experimenting with two ruck-men, with Max Heath joining Max Gawn in switching duties in this position. Gawn kicked two goals as a resting forward and it will be interesting to see how that combination works in the upcoming weeks.
Melbourne Team News
Brody Mihocek will miss with a hamstring injury that he sustained in the loss to Sydney. Harrison Petty could fill that role, while Tom McDonald is a chance to come in after a solid match in the VFL on the weekend. Andy Moniz-Wakefield and Jake Bowey are others that will come into consideration.
West Coast have dropped off after consecutive wins earlier in the season, dropping five in a row, including a couple by 100+ point margins, before going down to the previously winless Richmond by 11 points when entering that match as favourites.
They led the Tigers deep into the last quarter before conceding two of the last three goals to go down by 11 points. Tim Kelly picked up a game-high 30 disposals, while Harley Reid produced a 28-disposal and two-goal haul, but it wasn’t enough.
The Eagles led the inside 50 count (64-48) and gave more opportunities to their forwards. Jake Waterman booted three goals to take his tally for the season to 15 from eight matches. Scoring has been an issue for West Coast, going at just 69 points per game this season, while they are conceding 117, resulting in a differential of -48.
