Even though they were not among the top favorites, Anadolu Efes started the new season by winning the traditional VTB Cup in Russia.
Pablo Laso's side claimed three consecutive victories against top Russian teams: Zenit St Petersburg 100-76, Unics Kazan 91-79 and Lokomotiv Kuban 88-82.
The biggest summer signing and former EuroLeague MVP Mike James carried the team in the final, scoring 27 points, while Dario Saric added 15 points.
This duo caused a lot of problems for Barcelona in the EuroLeague opening round earlier this week, where Anadolu Efes lost 89-82 in Spain after collapsing in the final quarter. James and Saric combined to score 49 points.
Besiktas' Numbers are Improving
Besiktas played a series of friendly matches to build up their form, and the results were quite inconsistent.
They started this month with an 83-71 defeat to Dubai, but then responded with consecutive victories against CSKA Moscow 80-57 and Fuenlabrada 108-74, while wrapping up preparations with an 89-71 loss to Partizan in Belgrade.
The Black Eagles locked horns with Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Cup on Tuesday and lost easily 72-59. This was arguably their worst performance in years, shooting just 28% from the field while also missing 10 of 28 free-throw attempts.
Numbers were much better in the EuroLeague opening clash against Valencia at home on Friday, but Besiktas lacked defensive discipline and lost 96-94. Jaylen Nowell and Eugene Omoruyi were the top scorers, landing 17 points each.
