NFL Betting Tips

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams that are divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC).

The NFL regular season features 17 games that are played from early September to early January. Seven teams from each conference then advance to the playoffs, where the champions of the NFC and AFC take each other on in the Super Bowl which is held in early February.

The NFL was formed in 1920 and the first Super Bowl was held at the end of the 1966 season. The NFL has the highest average attendance of any professional sports league in the world and is the most popular sport in the United States.

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest and most lucrative club sporting events in the world. The New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers have won the most Super Bowl championships with six, while four teams have won five times, including the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers. The current champions are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Betting on NFL

NFL betting markets are similar to NBA betting markets. There are three major basic bets that bettors can make:

Money Line, Winner

A money line bet on an NFL game is the most basic bet, with the bettor wagering on the winner of the game.

Total Points

The total points betting market refers to the combined points that will be scored by both teams over the duration of a match. Sportsbook will get bettors the option of taking an Over/Under bet on the Totals Market. ‘Covering the bet’ is a term that you will hear when a side exceeds the points required for a successful bet.

Handicap, Line, Spread

Handicap, line or spread betting focuses on countering a team’s possible strength or weakness in a potential match-up. If a side is heavily favoured to win the match then they will receive a negative handicap and start from behind in the betting.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, a side that is a heavy underdog will be given a positive handicap to signify a points head start. NFL teams vary widely in strengths and abilities and the handicap offered by sportsbooks is a way to level the playing field. The points handicap is often called ‘the spread’ in the US betting market.

You’ll find some real value in the handicap market once you build up your familiarity with each team roster. The handicap market is the reference point for gauging a team’s chances of success in any NFL match up.

For example, the New England Patriots might be at odds of -6.5 against the Denver Broncos +6.5. A bet on the Patriots would win if they win the game by seven or more points, while a bet on the Broncos would pay out if they win or lose by six points or less.

Half Time/Full Time

Predict which team will be winning at half time and at full time, this bet can be useful in lopsided encounters to give you more value than a win bet.

Touchdown scorer

There are a range of different betting options if you want to focus on one player in an NFL game. Bet on which play will score the first touchdown of the game, or use the anytime touchdown scorer for a player to score anytime throughout the game.

Last touchdown scorer is also an option along with 2nd Half First Touchdown Scorer, First Touchdown Scorer Match Win Double and To Score First Touchdown For Their Team.

Alternative Totals

If an NFL game is tipped to go way over or under the total points, use alternative totals to get more bang for your buck by predicting a game that will be a lot more or less than the bookmakers line.

Team Points

These bets take the winner and loser out of the equation. Betting on only one team to score an amount of points can be done in a range of different betting markets, such as over/under total points and team to score in every quarter.

Other NFL Betting Markets

Similar to NBA basketball betting, punters have the ability to wager on specific outcomes during the duration of a match. These include 1st quarter, 1st and 2nd Half, Alternative Handicap Markets and individual team totals.

Bettors can also look at wagers over the duration of the season and these can cover season win totals for individual teams, Divisions and the overall Super Bowl Winner.

The Super Bowl is a major event on the sports calendar and bookmakers will offer special markets for this annual match. Some of the markets you’ll find include the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP), Super Bowl coin toss winner and the scorer of the first touchdown in the game.
