Besiktas are tagged as slight favorites to start their EuroLeague campaign with a win at home, facing Valencia, who were the most pleasant surprise package last season but have changed their roster almost entirely.
Besiktas Coming Off a Heavy Super Cup Defeat
Besiktas were stopped in the EuroCup final last year, losing to JL Bourg, but still got invited to join the EuroLeague after the French side decided to withdraw from the most elite European division.
Dusan Alimpijevic's side played a series of friendly matches to build up their form, and the results were quite inconsistent.
They started this month with an 83-71 defeat to Dubai, but then responded with consecutive victories against CSKA Moscow 80-57 and Fuenlabrada 108-74, while wrapping up preparations with an 89-71 loss to Partizan in Belgrade.
The Black Eagles locked horns with Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Cup on Tuesday and lost easily 72-59. This was arguably their worst performance in years, shooting just 28% from the field while also missing 10 of 28 free-throw attempts.
Valencia Entering a New Era
Valencia have undergone a massive roster overhaul during the offseason. Jean Montero, Braxton Key, Brancou Badio, Darius Thompson and Jaime Pradilla are no longer members of the team, as is head coach Pedro Martinez, who joined Real Madrid.
When it comes to signings, the two biggest additions are former MVPs Nikola Mirotic and TJ Shorts, while Armoni Brooks, Dylan Osetkowski and Jasiel Rivero should also play an important role.
After winning their two preseason friendlies against Zaragoza 88-81 and Obradoiro 108-95, the Oranges were beaten in their season-opening clash against Barcelona 87-86 in the Spanish Super Cup semifinals.
