Head To Head

Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson are old foes, having met 50 times in the PDC before. Their most famous clash came in the final of the 2017 World Championships, with van Gerwen claiming a 7-3 victory. "Mighty Mike" has beaten the Scotsman at three World Championships in total, with Anderson's only victory over his Dutch rival coming in the 2015 semi-finals, which he won 6-3 before going on to lift the trophy.

Michael van Gerwen Form

Michael van Gerwen has had a lot of things going on away from the oche this year. I feared those issues may have snuck into his game in the opening round, as "MVG" produced a sub-par performance when beating Japanese qualifier Mitsuhiko Tatsunami.

Since then, the three-time World Champion has been impressive. "MVG" dealt with an in-form opponent in William O'Connor with ease in Round Two, and cruised past German surprise package Arno Merk on Sunday evening, averaging just under 100 during a 4-1 victory.

Gary Anderson Form

Gary Anderson was forced into a deciding set against Adam Hunt in Round 1, and had some choice words for his opponent after the game. With that victory under his belt, "The Flying Scotsman" has gone from strength to strength, beating Connor Scutt 3-1 before a hard-fought triumph over a thoroughly in-form Jermaine Wattimena.

The 55-year-old recorded an average of 105 against Scutt, and almost equalled that in his victory over Jermaine Wattimena. Anderson missed Double 12 for a nine-darter during that epic match too. He should be high on confidence going into this Round 4 contest.

Verdict

Having been beaten by average opponents in his last three World Championships, we've seen vintage Gary Anderson on the Ally Pally stage this year. Anderson has been back to his power-scoring best, with a tournament check-out percentage of 35%.

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN hasn't produced the same sort of fireworks in his last two matches. Yet, "MVG" has played extremely well on both occasions, and the Dutchman looks to have several more gears he can shift into as the tournament progresses.

"Mighty Mike" likes to ensure that his performance level peaks towards the latter stages of the World Championships. His record here at the Ally Pally is impeccable, and he boasts some high-profile victories over Anderson on that famous stage.

Anderson will throw everything he has at van Gerwen, but I expect the Dutchman to soak up the pressure and strike back at the opportune moment. I'm going to back Michael van Gerwen to win, and over 18.5 Total 180s in the contest.
