The AFCON quarter-final match between Algeria and Nigeria promises an exciting showdown, with Nigeria's formidable attack featuring Victor Osimhen, who has netted 17 goals in his last 17 games. Algeria, though tough to beat with a 20-match unbeaten run, might face their toughest challenge yet against the Super Eagles' high-scoring edge. Algeria are a tough team to beat but Nigeria’s attack can’t be ignored, the Super Eagles top scoring at AFCON with 12 goals in four games.

This should be a great contest, Victor Osimhen to fire Nigeria to victory in the quarter-finals.

Key Stats - Osimhen the X Factor

  • Algeria are undefeated in their last 20 matches.
  • Algeria have won 5 of their last 7 matches.
  • Nigeria have won 6 of their last 8 competitive matches.
  • Nigeria have seen BTTS in 8 of their last 10 matches.
  • Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen has scored 17 goals in his last 17 matches.

HTH - Little Separation

These nations first met in 1980 and, Nigeria winning five straight from 2002 to 2016.

Algeria have hit back by winning the previous three encounters, the last two coming in friendlies.

Algeria Hard to Beat

Algeria are unbeaten in 20 matches and won all three group games at the Africa Cup of Nations, beginning with a 3-0 win against Sudan. Riyad Mahrez scored the opening two goals in a man of the match performance.

Mahrez scored again in a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso as they survived a late onslaught in Rabat.

Vladimir Petkovic overhauled his team against Equatorial Guinea but it made little difference. Zineddine Belaid, Fares Chaibi and Ibrahim Maza scored in the opening 32 minutes as Algeria cruised to a 3-1 victory.

Algeria were involved in a cagey clash against DR Congo in the Round of 16. The contest went all the way, Adil Boulbina coming off the bench and scoring in the 119th minute to secure a 1-0 win.
Petkovic was pleased with the victory despite the narrow scoreline, saying: "I’m happy with these kinds of matches because they require us to work hard and play aggressively against title contenders."

"The issue of getting three or four days of rest is not important at this stage. Our focus is on preparing well mentally and physically for the next match."

Algeria Confirmed Line Up & Team News

Algeria (4-2-3-1) Luca Zidane; Rafik Belghali, Aissa Mandi, Ramy Bensebaini, Rayan Ait-Nouri; Ramiz Zerrouki, Hicham Boudaoui; Ismael Bennacer; Riyad Mahrez, Ibrahim Maza, Fares Chaibi; Mohammed Amoura

Algeria lost Ismael Bennacer to injury against DR Congo with Ramiz Zerrouki taking his place in midfield.

Nigeria Top Scorers at AFCON

Nigeria failed to keep a clean sheet in the group stage but managed to win all three matches. Alex Iwobi assisted Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman in a 2-1 win against Tanzania.

Lookman was the star of the show against Tunisia, assisting Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi before scoring himself to establish a 3-0 lead. Eric Chelle’s side conceded twice but held on for a 3-2 victory and seal a spot in the Round of 16.

The Super Eagles were far too good for Uganda who were reduced to 10 men before the hour mark. Samuel Chukwueze provided two goals for Raphael Onyedika following Paul Onuachu’s opener, securing a comfortable 3-1 win in Fez.

Nigeria turned on the style against Mozambique, completely outplaying their opponents in a 4-0 victory. They had 2.82-0.10 xG with their front three on fire, Lookman and Akor Adams finding the net alongside a brace to Osimhen.

Bookmakers reacted in the outright winner market, Nigeria moving to third favourites behind Morocco and Senegal.
Chelle was pleased with the victory but focused immediately on the need to improve, saying: "I am very happy and proud of my players. They played a great game, but this is only one game."

"My duty now is to stay ambitious, train a lot, and maintain the intensity and aggressiveness of the team. We did nothing special. We just won one game, and we must continue to improve."

Addressing the incident between Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen that resulted in Osimhen demanding to be substituted, he said: "What happens on the pitch stays in the group. My job is to keep the players focused."

Nigeria Confirmed Line Up & Team News

Nigeria (4-3-1-2) Stanley Nwabali; Bright Osayi-Samuel, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Bruno Onyemaechi; Frank Onyeka, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi; Ademola Lookman; Victor Osimhen, Akor Adams

Chelle has selected the same starting side that got the job done against Mozambique.

Verdict

Nigeria are the top scorers at the Africa Cup of Nations, netting 12 goals in four matches. Algeria deserve a lot of respect and Nigeria are combustible, but I think that Victor Osimhen will prove decisive for the Super Eagles.
