Egypt vs Ivory Coast Preview

Egypt have not impressed at the Africa Cup of Nations and I don’t consider the Pharaohs to be title challengers.

Amad Diallo has been impressive for Ivory Coast, the in-form winger to continue to lead the way in the quarter-finals.

HTH - Close Contests

Egypt have an 8-6 advantage against Ivory Coast alongside seven draws.

The last clash came in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16, a 0-0 draw before Mohamed Salah’s final penalty sent the Pharaohs through in the shootout.

Egypt Underwhelming at AFCON

Egypt have been below their best at the Africa Cup of Nations but remain undefeated. They fell behind against Zimbabwe before Omar Marmoush and Mohamed Salah scored to secure a 2-1 win.

Salah scored again to give the Pharaohs the lead against South Africa. Mohamed Hany was sent off before half-time but they held on to secure a 1-0 victory.

Hossam Hassan’s side ended the group stage with a 0-0 draw against Angola. They registered just two shots on target and 0.62 xG, the point enough to earn top spot in Group B.

Egypt were taken all the way against Benin in the Round of 16. Their superior quality shined through in extra time, Yasser Ibrahim and Mohamed Salah scoring to make it 3-1.
Salah gave his thoughts after the match, saying: "I think physically we were better than the opponent, which gave us a slight advantage. There is no easy game in Africa, to be honest. The levels are quite close."

"I told the boys that there are no teams that will lose 4 or 5–0, for example. Benin have a team, a coach and a good structure, and I’m happy to get the win in the end."

"I don’t think we are favourites to win the title at all. We have young players, most of them play in Egypt. We fight for our country and we will see how far we can go."

Egypt Confirmed Line Up & Team News

Egypt (3-4-1-2) Mohamed El Shenawy; Yasser Ibrahim, Hamdy Fathy, Ramy Rabia; Mohamed Hany, Marwan Attia, Hossam Abdelmaguid, Ahmed Abou El Fotouh; Emam Ashour; Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush

Mohamed Hamdy suffered an ACL rupture against Benin with Ahmed Abou El Fotouh starting at left-back. Trezeguet makes way for Emam Ashou and Hossam Abdelmaguid replaces Ibrahim Adel.

Mohanad Lasheen suffered a rib contusion against Angola and could be an option off the bench.

Amad Diallo on Fire at AFCON

Ivory Coast came to the Africa Cup of Nations after an impressive World Cup qualifying campaign. They have continued that form, Amad Diallo scoring in a dominant 1-0 win over Mozambique.

Diallo scored against Cameroon but they were pegged back, Ghislain Konan’s own goal resulting in a 1-1 draw. Emerse Fae’s side were 2-0 down against Gabon, Jean-Philippe Krasso getting a goal back before late strikes to Evann Guessand and Bazoumana Toure secured a 3-2 victory.

The Elephants outclassed Burkina Faso in the Round of 16, winning 3-0 in Marrakesh to confirm their title credentials. Diallo scored and assisted Yan Diomande to continue his impressive form, Toure coming off the bench to bag another late goal.
Diallo highlighted Ivory Coast’s teamwork after the win, saying: "First of all, we fought together as a team. Everyone is focused on contributing in whatever way they can."

"There is also a real chemistry on the pitch, a closeness between us that makes our play more fluid. There is a genuine connection, a certain rhythm in the way we play."

"No one is trying to be the hero or to shine individually for the country. If I have the chance to make the pass, I do it. It’s instinctive; I give him the ball. That’s how we play."

Ivory Coast Confirmed Line Up & Team News

Burkina Faso (4-3-3) Yahia Fofana, Guela Doue, Odilon Kossounou, Evan Ndicka, Ghislain Konan; Christ Inao Oulai, Ibrahim Sangare, Franck Kessie; Amad Diallo, Evann Guessand, Yan Diomande

No surprises from Fae who has selected the same wide that started against Burkina Faso.

Verdict

Amad Diallo has been in fantastic form Ivory Coast who are the defending Africa Cup of Nations champions. Egypt have not been impressing at the tournament, Diallo and the Elephants to capitalise in Agadir.
