Bolton ended their seven-year hiatus from the Championship after winning the 2025/26 League One play-offs. Wanderers won all three play-off games and thrashed Stockport 4-1 in the final.

The Trotters started pre-season with a 1-0 defeat against Dunajska Streda. Bolton responded with a four-match unbeaten run, including a home draw with Everton 0-0 and a 1-0 victory against NAC Breda. 

Steven Schumacher’s team fell to a rare defeat at Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup and lost 1-0. Wanderers had the better chances with 1.75 XG and 11 shots and conceded with 20 minutes left. 

Preston on Long-Term Decline


Preston’s long-term form is poor and the Lancashire side have lost eight of their previous 11. PNE ended last season as one of the most out-of-form Championship sides, failing to win in 19 of their last 25 fixtures.

The Lilywhites won their first pre-season friendly and beat non-league Bamber Bridge 4-1 at home. Five defeats followed, including away losses at Sheffield Wednesday 3-2, Marine 3-0, Bradford 3-2 and Stockport 1-0.

Paul Heckingbottom’s side started the 2026/27 season with a 1-1 EFL Cup first-round draw with Huddersfield. Preston conceded the opener on 38 minutes and Jusef Erabi levelled in second-half injury time.
