Coventry vs Aston Villa Betting Tips & Live Stream - Villa to Bounce Back in the EFL Cup

Aston Villa travel to Coventry for an EFL Cup clash, with Villa clear favourites. Coventry have struggled throughout the season, losing four of their last five games and lacking squad depth. Aston Villa, meanwhile, have avoided defeat in two of three away fixtures and historically hold a strong head-to-head advantage. With key injuries for both sides, Villa’s superior quality and form suggest a likely away win. The recommendation is to back Aston Villa for the full-time result at odds of 2.3.

Coventry vs Aston Villa Preview

Coventry have been outplayed against top-flight opponents this season. Aston Villa will sense an opportunity to build some form here and an EFL Cup away win is the best bet.

Key Stats - Coventry Lose a Lot

  • Coventry have lost their last 3 matches.
  • Coventry have lost 6 of their last 8 home games against Aston Villa.
  • Aston Villa have won 2 of their last 4 competitive away games.

H2H - Villans Advantage

Aston Villa have a 32-10 advantage against Coventry, alongside 17 draws.

Coventry Lacking the Quality to Compete

Frank Lampard’s Coventry have struggled in the 2026/27 campaign, losing four of five games and conceding 12 goals.

The Sky Blues’ only victory this season was a 4-2 EFL Cup victory against League One opponents Plymouth.

The west Midlands outfit have lost three games in a row since the Plymouth win. Coventry were beaten 1-0 at home against Hull and away at Man City.

Lampard’s side also lost 5-0 at home against Brighton in the Premier League. Coventry had just 30% possession, conceded in the first half and shipped four goals after half time.

Aston Villa Can Build Away Form

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have avoided defeat in two of their opening three away games in all competitions this season.

A 0-0 draw at Hull came before a 3-2 win at Club Brugge. The Villans controlled both matches, with 1.93 XG and 3.22 XG.

Villa couldn’t bring their solid away form to their home clash against Nottingham Forest and lost 2-1 on Saturday. Alysson’s second-half header cancelled out Forest’s opener and Villa conceded again in the 91st minute.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Coventry (3-4-2-1): David Bentley; Aurele Amenda, Bobby Thomas, Ethan Pinnock; Milan van Ewijk, Victor Torp, Matt Grimes, Jay Dasilva; Sidiki Cherif, Ephron Mason-Clark; Brandon Thomas-Asante

Taiwo Awoniyi is suspended. The striker was sent off for violent conduct in the Brighton defeat and has a three-match ban.

Forward Haji Wright, midfielder Josh Eccles and defenders Kaine Kesler-Hayden and Luke Woolfenden are ruled out due to injury.

Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Marco Bizot; Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Tyrone Mings, Matteo Ruggeri; Johan Manzambi, Ross Barkley; Ibrahim Mbaye, Emiliano Buendia, Alysson; Tammy Abraham

Centre-back Pau Torres is an injury doubt after coming off in the first half against Forest.

Midfield duo Amadou Onana and Leon Goretzka are injured and unavailable. Forward Brian Madjo is also sidelined with an ankle problem.

Ian Maatsen is expected to be out for an extended period after a recent ankle injury. Unai Emery was unsure about the full-back’s recovery timeline and said, “I don’t know exactly, but the first information we have is that maybe it is a long time.”

Verdict

Coventry aren’t a good side and the Sky Blues don’t have the depth to compete with stronger sides. Aston Villa have been decent away this season and can win in the EFL Cup.
