Thailand are set to kick off their ASEAN Championship campaign against Laos, entering the match as clear favorites due to their impressive recent form and historical dominance. Laos, despite a rare win over Nepal earlier this year, have struggled defensively and rarely progressed past the group stage in this competition. Thailand boast a strong squad and an unbeaten streak, positioning them for a likely high-scoring victory. The key recommendation: Thailand are expected to win comfortably, with over 2.5 goals likely.

Laos vs Thailand Predictions

Thailand will be confident of making a positive start to their ASEAN Championship campaign on Saturday.

I have my stake on the visitors to win with at least three goals scored.

Thailand Backed in Laos

  • Laos lost 6 of their last 8 matches
  • Laos have seen over 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 matches
  • Thailand won 5 of their last 7 matches
  • Thailand have seen over 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 6 matches

Thailand Lead Recent Head to Head

Laos and Thailand have met on just four occasions since 2001. Thailand won two of those games, while two matches finished deadlocked.

Laos Claim Rare Win

Laos return to competitive action nearly four months after a narrow 1-0 victory over Nepal in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers.

That victory marked Vladica Grujic's first match in charge of the national team. Despite the win, Laos failed to qualify, finishing third in the group, 12 points behind section winners Vietnam.

The Serbian boss has a tough job on his hands, with Laos failing to win 14 of 15 internationals before his appointment in February.

Defensively vulnerable, the Asian outsiders leaked an average of 2.63 goals per game across their last 11 fixtures.

Competing at the ASEAN Championships for the 16th time, Laos have fallen at the group stage in all 15 previous appearances at this competition.

Thailand Extend Unbeaten Run

Thailand come into Saturday’s ASEAN Championship Group B contest as one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Anthony Hudson's side have enjoyed a strong run of form in the past year, remaining unbeaten in their last seven international fixtures.

The in-form War Elephants recorded five successive victories between October 2025 and March this year before drawing recent friendlies against Kuwait (2-2) and China (0-0).

Four of those five wins came in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, with Hudson's side securing qualification from Group D.

Seven-time winners of this competition, Thailand have reached the final in six of the seven editions staged since 2012.

The War Elephants finished as runners-up in 2024, losing 5-3 on aggregate to regional rivals Vietnam.

Laos vs Thailand Squads and Team News

Forwards: Chony Waenpaseuth, Soukphachan Lueanthala, Xayasith Singsavang, Kouaycheng Nouphakdy, Somwang Choummaly, Vilay Kulungsy, Avilay Siphavanh, Phayak Siphanom

Laos boss Grujic named an inexperienced 30-man preliminary squad for the upcoming ASEAN Championship.

Italy-based midfielder Khonesavanh Keonuchanh is one of ten uncapped players included in the selection.

Young Elephants midfielder Bounphachan Bounkong is expected to feature this weekend. The 25-year-old has scored eight goals in 36 international appearances.

Thailand Squad

Goalkeepers: Kampol Pathomakkakul, Korrakot Pipatnadda, Chatchai Budprom
Defenders: Chaiyaphon Otton, Nattapong Sayriya, Narubadin Weerawatnodom, Pansa Hemviboon, Pichitchai Sienkrathok, Manuel Bihr, Waris Choolthong, Wanchai Jarunongkran, Adisorn Promrak, Oussama Thiangkham
Midfielders: Kakana Khamyok, Chawanwit Saelao, Thossawat Limwannasathian, Pokklaw Anan, Picha Autra, Worachit Kanitsribampen, Sarach Yooyen, Seksan Ratree
Forwards: Jehhanafee Mamah, Teerasak Poeiphimai, Yotsakorn Burapha, Patrik Gustavsson

Head coach Hudson has a strong 25-man squad available for Thailand’s Group B opener this weekend.

PT Prachuap defender Oussama Thiangkham is one of three uncapped players included in the Thai squad.

Veteran forward Teerasil Dangda is a notable absentee from the selection.

English boss Hudson played down Thailand’s chances of winning a record-breaking eighth ASEAN Championship title.

"Thailand is not a title contender, but I am still satisfied with this squad and will do my best," Hudson said

"Vietnam have a better chance of winning. They have prepared for about four weeks, temporarily suspending their domestic league to call up their best players. I am not putting pressure on them, just viewing things objectively."

Verdict

Laos should battle hard in front of their home supporters, but the gap in class is difficult to ignore.

Thailand have been in excellent form, and I expect the visitors to ease to a likely high-scoring win on Saturday.
