Timor-Leste vs Vietnam Predictions & Tips - ASEAN Holders to Start with Comfortable Win
Vietnam kick off their ASEAN Championship 2024 campaign against Timor-Leste, who return to the finals after a 6-1 aggregate win over Brunei. Vietnam, boasting a 16-match winning run and rising FIFA ranking, are strong favorites to win, with their experienced squad expected to outclass Timor-Leste’s relatively inexperienced lineup. The match, their first-ever head-to-head, is predicted to feature over 2.5 goals, with Vietnam likely maintaining their remarkable form. Timor-Leste deserve credit for qualifying but face a tough challenge against the championship holders.

Timor-Leste vs Vietnam Predictions
Timor-Leste begin their ASEAN Championship campaign against defending champions Vietnam on Friday.
The Vietnamese enter the tournament as one of the favourites and should have far too much quality for a Timor-Leste side that is still developing at international level.
I have my money on Vietnam to secure a comfortable win this weekend.
Vietnam to Maintain Winning Form
- Timor-Leste lost their last 16 matches (ASEAN Championship)
- Timor-Leste have seen over 2.5 goals in their last 6 matches
- Vietnam won their last 16 matches
- Vietnam have seen over 2.5 goals in 13 of their last 16 matches
Vietam and Timor-Leste Set For First-Ever Meeting
Vietnam and Timor-Leste will meet for the first time at Chonburi Stadium in Thailand.
Timor-Leste Secure ASEAN Championship Return
Timor-Leste booked their place at the ASEAN Championship with a convincing 6-1 aggregate victory over Brunei last month.
After cruising to a 3-0 first-leg win, Jose Salazar's side briefly fell behind in the return leg before responding with three second-half goals to complete a comfortable 6-1 aggregate success.
A first international goal from Zion Cruz secured Timor-Leste’s fifth-ever qualification for the ASEAN Championship.
Past appearances at this competition have been fruitless for The Crocodiles. The Southeast Asian side lost all 16 previous matches at the finals, conceding 68 goals while scoring just nine.
Timor-Leste suffered the heaviest defeat in their history at the 2024 ASEAN Championship, falling to a 10-0 loss against Thailand.
More recently, Salazar’s men lost ten of 11 internationals before their recent wins against Brunei.
Vietnam Maintain Remarkable Winning Run
Vietnam come into the ASEAN Championship in hot form after three successive friendly victories in the past fortnight.
The Golden Star Warriors secured back-to-back 2-1 wins against Yongin City and Gangwon before a thumping 4-0 victory against Myanmar.
Nguyen Xuan Son maintained his impressive scoring streak, with his 11th international goal in just nine appearances helping Vietnam to a dominant victory.
Remarkably, Sang Sik Kim’s side have now won each of their last 16 international fixtures since December 2024. The Golden Star Warriors scored an average of 2.8 goals per game in those victories.
Over a longer period, Vietnam remain unbeaten in 20 internationals since a 2-1 defeat against Thailand nearly two years ago.
The ASEAN Championship holders' superb form has seen them rise to 99th in the FIFA rankings.

Verdict
Vietnam should make a winning start to their ASEAN Championship campaign on Friday.
Timor-Leste deserve plenty of credit for reaching the group stage, but the gulf in class is likely to prove too much.
I have my stake on Vietnam to win and over 2.5 goals scored.
