Sweden and Japan both enter their Houston clash on the back of strong attacking performances—Sweden routed Tunisia 5-1, while Japan drew 2-2 with the Netherlands. With both teams showing firepower, the best prediction is that both teams will score. Additionally, Viktor Gyokeres is in excellent form, having netted six times in his last four games, making him a solid bet to score anytime.

All of Sweden’s games this year have been quite action packed and offered a lot of goals. Both sides have great scoring potential, so I am predicting a high-scoring affair in Texas.

Key Stats

  • Netherlands have seen BTTS in 4 of their last 5 matches.
  • Netherlands have seen BTTS & over 2.5 goals in their last 2 matches.
  • Netherlands have seen BTTS in 5 of their last 6 matches against Sweden.
  • Sweden have seen BTTS & over 3.5 goals in 6 of their last 7 matches.
  • Viktor Gyokeres has scored 6 goals in his last 4 matches for Sweden.

Netherlands Lead H2H

This is going to be the 26th head to head match between these sides, the Netherlands holding a 12-8 advantage in terms of victories.

Oranje Failed to Impress Against Japan

The Netherlands were tagged as favorites in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Japan but were held to a 2-2 draw, failing to impress.

Oranje took the lead twice, with Virgil van Dijk breaking the deadlock shortly after the break, while Crysencio Summerville scored a beauty in the 64th minute to restore the advantage. However, they conceded again just before stoppage time. Both goals were assisted by Ryan Gravenberch.

Earlier this month, Ronald Koeman’s side lost a home friendly to Algeria 1-0 despite having 2.19 expected goals and firing 17 shots. They then returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Uzbekistan just before the tournament, generating a 4.62-0.98 expected goals advantage in this match.

Swedes Flying After Their Opening Win

Sweden looked impressive in the opening round in their 5-1 victory against Tunisia which is a massive step towards securing a spot in the Round of 32. They had 1.34-0.27 expected goals and 7-2 shots on target.

Yasin Ayari scored a brace in this match, while Alexander Isak also played a huge role with one goal and two assists. Arsenal’s Viktor Gyokeres and Mattias Svanberg also appeared on the scoresheet.

The Swedes barely made it to the tournament thanks to playoff victories against Ukraine 3-1 and Poland 3-2, while their results in June friendlies were also high scoring affairs, a 3-1 loss to Norway and a 2-2 draw against Greece.

Team News & Predicted Lineups

Netherlands (4-3-3) Bart Verbruggen; Denzel Dumfries, Micky van de Ven, Virgil van Dijk, Nathan Ake; Tijjani Reijnders, Ryan Gravenberch, Frenkie de Jong; Cody Gakpo, Crysencio Summerville, Donyell Malen

Memphis Depay, all-time best scorer for the Netherlands is expected to start on bench once again due to not so great fitness. Crysencio Summerville was the top rated player in the opening round against Japan and one of the scorers.

Oranje have no reported injuries ahead of this clash.

Sweden (4-4-2) Viktor Johansson; Daniel Svensson, Isak Hien, Victor Lindelof, Gabriel Gudmundsson; Jesper Karlstrom, Mattias Svanberg; Lucas Bergvall, Yasin Ayari; Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak

Many expected Anthony Elanga to get more space in the opening round, but he got to play for only a couple of minutes, replacing Alexander Isak in stoppage time. Viktor Gyokeres remains the biggest attacking threat, having scored six goals in his last four games for the national team.

Verdict

Netherlands drawn against Japan 2-2 while Sweden beat Tunisia 5-1 in the opening round, and I expect another goal-packed clash in Houston on Saturday. BTTS is the best bet.

Another option worth considering is Viktor Gyokeres to score anytime. His recent form wearing the national jersey has been sensational, netting six times in his last four appearances.
