Recent history between Espanyol and Los Blancos suggests a low-scoring encounter, with each of their last three meetings finishing under 2.5 goals. Espanyol's defense is in top form, having not conceded a single shot on target last weekend, while Los Blancos secured two straight clean sheets in their latest friendlies. Given these defensive strengths, another tight match is likely, with a strong recommendation to expect few goals.

Real Madrid stepped up defensively last week and kept two clean sheets in a row against Schalke and La Coruna. Espanyol's defensive numbers at home were great last season, so I am backing less than three goals on Saturday.

Key Stats

  • Espanyol have kept a clean sheet in 3 of their last 5 matches (La Liga).
  • Espanyol have seen under 2.5 goals in their last 3 matches against Real Madrid.
  • Real Madrid have seen under 2.5 goals in their last 4 away matches (La Liga).

Los Blancos Dominate H2H

These two sides have a long history when it comes to head to head matches. Real Madrid have a 119-46 advantage in terms of victories, 36 games ending without a winner.

Espanyol Sitting Top of the Table

Thanks to seven points they won in the final three La Liga rounds last season, Espanyol managed to avoid relegation, finishing the season in 11th place just four points above the red line.

Manolo Gonzalez's side locked horns against plenty of English teams during the pre-season, games against Burnley (2-2) and Middlesbrough (3-3) ending without a winner, while losing to Coventry 3-1 in their final test.

However, Espanyol looked fantastic in their season-opening clash last weekend, cruising to a 3-0 home victory against Levante. Roberto Fernandez Jaen stole the spotlight here, netting a first-half brace, while they allowed zero shots on target to the opposition.

Real Madrid Looked Strong in Pre-Season

After another trophyless season, Real Madrid parted ways with Alvaro Arbeloa and appointed legendary head manager Jose Mourinho earlier this summer.

Jose’s debut was in late July, Los Blancos beating Leganes 4-1 in a friendly match, while they wasted a 2-0 lead against Fiorentina earlier this month, the game ending 2-2 (Endrick and Alexis Ciria on target).

Los Blancos picked up great form since, claiming three consecutive victories on the road against Ferencvaros 2-1, Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 and most recently Schalke 3-0. Carlos Espi netted two goals in these encounters.

Team News & Predicted Lineups

Espanyol (4-2-3-1) Marko Dmitrovic; Omar El Hilali, Clemens Riedel, Unai Nunez, Carlos Hinojo; Urko Gonzalez, Pol Lozano; Jose Calatrava, Javi Hernandez, Tyrhys Dolan; Roberto Fernandez

Despite missing Kike Garcia, Javi Puado, and the suspended Leandro Cabrera, the hosts aim to build on momentum with striker Roberto Fernandez leading the line after scoring a double.

Real Madrid (4-2-3-1) Thibaut Courtois; Denzel Dumfries, Dean Huijsen, Ibrahima Konate, Marc Cucurella; Federico Valverde, Bernardo Silva; Brahim Diaz, Arda Guler, Vinicius Junior; Kylian Mbappe

Real Madrid have traveled to Catalonia dealing with several injury concerns, as Eder Militao, Rodrygo, Raul Asencio, and Ferland Mendy remain unavailable, while Endrick and Aurelien Tchouameni are facing late fitness tests.

Verdict

The last three head to head clashes between these sides ended under 2.5 goals and I suspect this might be the case on Saturday as well. Espanyol didn't allow a single shot on target last weekend, while Los Blancos kept two clean sheets in a row in recent friendlies.
