Sabah Baku is predicted to advance to the next phase of the UEFA Champions League qualifiers over Hapoel Beer Sheva. After a narrow 2-1 loss in their first encounter, Sabah Baku’s home record—winning all home qualifiers with a 7-0 goal difference—instills confidence. The Azerbaijan side previously overturned a similar deficit against AGF Aarhus with a commanding performance at home. Given Hapoel’s inconsistent results and Sabah’s solid defense, the recommendation is to back Sabah Baku for the win and to qualify.

Sabah Baku were in an identical situation in the previous round against AGF Aarhus but delivered at home and won 4-0, firing 29 shots and recording 3.23 xG. I expect them to beat Hapoel Beer Sheva too and advance to the group phase.

Key Stats

  • Sabah Baku have won to nil in their last 4 home matches.
  • Hapoel Beer Sheva have lost 4 of their last 8 matches.

Second Head to Head Meeting

Last week's clash in Romania was the first head to head meeting between Sabah Baku and Hapoel Beer Sheva.

Hosts Were in This Situation Before

Sabah Baku had a great start in the first tie against Hapoel Beer Sheva, Veljko Simic breaking the deadlock just six minutes in, but then they decided to park the bus which led to a 2-1 loss.

The Azerbaijan champions started their UCL qualifying run very early, eliminating TNS 4-1 and KuPS 3-0 on aggregate, followed by a 5-2 win over AGF Aarhus in the previous round (lost 2-1 in Denmark, won 4-0 at home).

Speaking of their domestic affairs, Sabah started the new season with a 2-0 victory against Kapaz where Xander Severina and Jay Mickels found the net.

Hapoel Used to Playing Outside of Israel

Hapoel Beer Sheva conceded early in last week's tie against Sabah Baku, then established control, high possession (67%) and converted two out of their three goal chances to win 2-1.

Their UCL qualifying run started in early August where they lost the first tie to Vikingur Reykjavik 2-1 in Iceland then recovered and won 2-0 in the reverse match to advance.

Next, they caused a massive upset in the previous round, knocking out the Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade 3-0 on aggregate. The Israeli side won 1-0 on a neutral court in Hungary, then claimed a 2-0 victory at Rajko Mitic (Javon East had one goal and one assist).

Team News & Predicted Lineups

Sabah Baku (4-3-3) Stas Pokatilov; Akim Zedadka, Steve Solvet, Diogo Almeida, Tymoteusz Puchacz; Ivan Lepinjica, Umarali Rakhmonaliev, Aleksey Isaev; Joy Lance Mickels, Veljko Simic, Xander Severina

Khayal Aliyev remains sidelined with a tendon injury for the home side. Veljko Simic has been their top scorer in the UCL qualifiers so far.

Hapoel Beer Sheva (4-3-3) Ofir Marciano; Guy Mizrahi, Miguel Vitor, Itay Rotman, Pedro Miguel Santos Amador; Lucas de Souza Ventura, Niv Yehoshua, Eliel Peretz; Zahi Ahmed, Igor Zlatanovic, Amir Chaim Ganah

Visitors are dealing with multiple absences including Joao Victor, Pedro Amador and Dan Biton.

Verdict

Sabah Baku have won all three UCL qualifying games at home so far with a goal difference of 7-0. I am backing them to extend this run and eliminate Hapoel Beer Sheva on Tuesday.
