Alcaraz the Favourite in Barcelona

Carlos Alcaraz started 2026 with 16 consecutive victories, winning the Australian Open and Qatar Open. His first loss came against Daniil Medvedev in the Indian Wells semi-finals.

The 22-year-old was beaten by Sebastian Korda in the third round in Miami before turning his attention to clay. He couldn’t defend his title in Monte Carlo, going down 7-6 6-3 to Jannik Sinner in the final.

The Spaniard slipped to World No.2 before returning to Barcelona where he is a two-time champion. He got past qualifier Otto Virtanen 6-4 6-2 in the first round, saving 5/6 break points.

Machac Finding Some Form

Tomas Machac won the title in Adelaide but hasn’t reached a quarter-final since. He lost four of his final five matches on hard courts to drop out of the Top 50.

Switching to clay did little to improve his fortunes, the 25-year-old beaten by Rafael Jodar in his opening match in Marrakech. He beat Francisco Cerundolo in Monte Carlo before a narrow 6-1 6-7 6-3 third round loss to Jannik Sinner.

The Czech had to overcome a slow start against Sebastian Baez in the first round in Barcelona. He stormed home to win 2-6 6-4 6-1, completely dominating the third set.

Verdict

Carlos Alcaraz is the overwhelming favourite to beat Tomas Machac but the Czech has found some form on clay. I am expecting this clash to go over 19.5 games.
