Medvedev in Form

Daniil Medvedev has won two titles in 2026, winning the Brisbane International before a shock fourth round defeat to Learner Tien at the Australian Open.

The Russian went out early in Rotterdam and Doha but was back to his best in Dubai. He beat Felix Auger Aliassime on his way to the final where he had a walkover against Tallon Griekspoor.

The 30-year-old had a tough trip to Indian Wells but showed no signs of fatigue, defeating Alejandro Tabilo 6-4 6-2 in his opening match. He thrashed Sebastian Baez 6-4 6-0, saving all four break points.

Medvedev’s serve has been broken just twice in his previous six matches. Following the title win in Dubai, he said: “We knew before the start of the week, the way I was practising, I couldn't miss a ball. We knew it was going to be a great week.”

Michelsen Yet to Break into Top 20

Alex Michelsen has been a Top 50 player since August 2024 but is yet to reach the next level. He is 9-5 this year, picking up straight sets victories over Learner Tien, Sebastian Korda and Valentin Vacherot.

The American failed to get past the second round in his previous four events but corrected that in Indian Wells. He beat Ugo Humbert 7-5 6-7 7-6 in just under three hours, saving 2/3 break points.

The 21-year-old took out Taylor Fritz 6-4 7-6 in the third round, an impressive performance against the seventh seed. The victory improved his record to 3-7 against Top 10 players.

Michelsen talked about his performance against Fritz: “I played higher than my average level. That's what you have to do to beat a guy like him.”

Verdict

Daniil Medvedev has won two titles this year, his serve unbroken in four matches. Alex Michelsen deserves some respect after taking out Taylor Fritz, but Medvedev is playing at a different level right now.
