Francisco Cerundolo is riding high on momentum following his recent title in Buenos Aires and is on the brink of reaching the quarterfinals in Rio de Janeiro. With a solid 8–2 match record in 2026 and an impressive past performance on Rio's clay, Cerundolo is poised as a favorite in his matchup against Thiago Agustin Tirante. In contrast, Tirante is seeking a rare advanced-stage finish, his first since a notable run in Bastad 2024. All indicators suggest Cerundolo's strong form should secure him a comfortable victory.

Francisco Cerundolo arrives in Rio with strong momentum after a title-winning run in Buenos Aires last week, and that confidence should carry over onto these courts.

When he gets on a roll on clay, he can be very difficult to slow down. Against Thiago Agustin Tirante, Cerundolo’s current form and rhythm make him the clear favorite to keep the run going.

Cerundolo Nears Another Rio Quarterfinal

  • Cerundolo is one win away from reaching his fourth quarterfinal in Rio.
  • Cerundolo has won eight of his ten matches so far in 2026.

Cerundolo Riding Title Momentum

Francisco Cerundolo finally ended the frustration of near misses on South American clay by capturing the Buenos Aires title last week, doing so without dropping a set.

He has carried that confidence straight into Rio, opening his campaign with a composed straight-sets win over Mariano Navone and showing no signs of a post-title dip.

The Argentine has been extremely solid since the start of the season, highlighted by a run to the second week at the Australian Open and an overall 8–2 record in 2026.

Cerundolo also owns a strong record in Rio de Janeiro, which bodes well for another deep run. In his previous appearances here, he has regularly progressed to the latter stages, reaching the quarterfinals multiple times and turning a couple of those runs into semifinal appearances.

Tirante Eyes Rare Quarterfinal

Thiago Agustin Tirante made a strong start to his Rio de Janeiro campaign, earning a straight-sets win over former champion Cristian Garin for his first main-draw victory at ATP level this season.

The Argentine now sits one win away from a rare quarterfinal appearance on the main tour. Across his career, he has reached that stage only once at ATP level, with his breakthrough run coming in Bastad in 2024.

Despite limited experience at this level, Tirante has shown he can compete with higher-ranked opponents. He holds a 1–4 record against top-20 players, with his standout win coming against Andrey Rublev in Bastad 2024.
