Coco Gauff is poised to have the upper hand against Elise Mertens in their upcoming match in Dubai. Gauff has a strong record with three quarterfinal appearances in five Dubai events and is 4-0 against Mertens. Mertens, despite a steady start to the season, has been struggling at WTA 1000 events. Mertens has been steady this season, yet her difficulties at the WTA 1000 level tilt this matchup firmly in Gauff’s favor.

Quarterfinal Trend Favors Gauff

  • Gauff has won 17 of her last 20 matches against players outside the top 20.
  • She has reached the quarterfinal in 3 of her last 5 Dubai appearances.

Gauff Ends Middle East Slump With Dubai Win

Coco Gauff defeated Anna Kalinskaya 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round in Dubai. She was broken four times but converted six breaks of her own to seal the win.

The victory snapped her four-match losing streak in Middle East events and marked her first win in the region since her 2024 Dubai quarterfinal run.

Last season, Gauff reached eight quarterfinals, five at WTA 1000 level, though none came before the clay swing. She now has a chance to change that this week.

In five previous Dubai appearances, she has made the quarterfinals three times, most recently in 2024 with wins over Elisabetta Cocciaretto and Karolina Pliskova before falling in the last eight.

Mertens Finds Form After Doha Setback

Elise Mertens advanced to the Dubai third round with straight-sets wins over Marie Bouzkova and Emma Navarro, dropping no more than four games in either match.

She had suffered a heavy loss to Daria Kasatkina in Doha but has bounced back well this week.

Mertens has not reached a quarterfinal since Monterrey last year, missing a chance at the Australian Open against Elena Rybakina.

Aside from her 2021 semifinal, she has not recorded multiple wins in her other Dubai appearances.

Verdict

Elise Mertens has made a solid start to the season, but her ongoing struggles at WTA 1000 events and against top-tier opponents in recent years give Coco Gauff the clear edge in this clash.
