BBC Sports Personality of the Year Odds – England’s World Cup failure to cost Harry Kane?
Harry Kane’s chances of winning the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award have taken a hit after England's heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals. Previously the favourite, Kane's odds have drifted to 11/2, leaving Rory McIlroy (11/4) and Matt Weston (5/1) as the new frontrunners. While Kane is still in contention, the bookmakers now consider McIlroy’s Masters wins and Weston's Olympic achievements as more compelling. Other contenders include Jude Bellingham, Keely Hodgkinson, and Lewis Hamilton.
- Harry Kane’s SPOTY odds slid after England’s World Cup defeat
- Rory McIlroy and Matt Weston now lead the betting
- Kane still in contention but no longer the favourite
Harry Kane has drifted in the betting for BBC Sports Personality of the Year following England’s heart-breaking defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the World Cup.
The England and Bayern Munich striker had been heading up the market for several weeks as the Three Lions successfully negotiated their way through the tournament, but that all changed when they blew a one-goal lead to lose on Wednesday night.
Having gone ahead through an Anthony Gordon goal, England sat back too deep for the final thirty minutes of the clash with the Argentinians, and that back-fired on them as Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez both struck to condemn Kane & Co. to a 2-1 defeat.
Had England beaten Argentina and gone on to win the World Cup, Kane would have been a certainty for the BBC gong as the first English captain to lift the biggest trophy in international football since Bobby Moore in 1966.
However, the bookmakers believe that England’s quest for World Cup glory was not the only thing that ended on the night – they believe Kane’s chances of becoming Sports Personality of the Year have also gone up in smoke.
While he is not out the reckoning entirely, the 32-year-old striker is now out to 11/2 to win the award with bet365, putting him behind golf star Rory McIlroy and winter sports star Matt Weston.
McIlroy is the 11/4 favourite, having become only the fourth man to ever win back-to-back Masters titles earlier this year, while Weston is now 5/1 after becoming the first British athlete ever to win two medals at a single Winter Olympics – taking gold in the individual and mixed skeleton races.
Elsewhere in the betting, England midfielder Jude Bellingham is a 7/1 shot, having been one of the standout performers at the World Cup, while world indoor 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson is considered a 12/1 outsider ahead of darts star Luke Littler, and Formula 1 aces George Russell and Lewis Hamilton – all priced at 14/1.
