Belgium had a strong run in the EuroVolley 2026 group stage, securing four victories in five matches and finishing second, behind Finland and ahead of Serbia, Denmark, Estonia and the Netherlands.
After starting the tournament with a 3-1 victory against archrivals the Netherlands, they were beaten by group winners Finland 3-2, which was considered an upset.
Belgium returned to winning ways instantly, claiming back-to-back victories against Denmark and Estonia with a 3-1 scoreline on both occasions, then crushing Serbia in straight sets in the final round.
Czech Republic Stumbling Against the Group Favorites
The Czech Republic had a very strong start to the tournament, clinching a spot in the playoffs after claiming three consecutive victories against Greece 3-1, Sweden 3-2 and Slovakia 3-0.
Performances were not so great against the group favorites, though, registering back-to-back defeats against 1st-placed Italy and 2nd-placed Slovenia, losing 3-1 on both occasions.
The Czechs participated in the previous European Championship in 2023, made it to the elimination stage but lost to Serbia 3-0 in the Round of 16.
Verdict
Czech Republic deserve some respect for their group-stage accomplishments and could snatch a set here, but only as consolation. I am backing favorites Belgium to win in four sets.
