Slovenia Carrying Good Form Into the Knockout Stage
Slovenia had a fantastic start to the EuroVolley 2026, crushing underdogs Slovakia in straight sets in the opening round, then cruising past Sweden 3-0 while allowing just 49 points to the opposition.
They were tagged as massive favorites in the third round against Greece but surprisingly lost 3-1, then bounced back instantly against the Czech Republic, winning 3-1.
Slovenia needed at least one point in the final round to secure second position, and they got it against favored Italy, losing a five-set thriller.
The Little Dragons also had an amazing run at the previous European Championship three years ago, making it to the semifinals, losing to Poland 3-1, then defeating France 3-2 to secure the bronze medal.
Serbia Running Out of Steam After Two Comebacks
Even though a 3-1 scoreline might not suggest it, Serbia's opening clash against Estonia was very close, covering just a –4.5 handicap, followed by a defeat to Finland in straight sets.
They were on the edge of losing against the Netherlands in the third round, trailing by two sets as favorites, but pulled off a comeback and won 17-15 in the tiebreaker. The same scenario was seen in the follow-up clash against Denmark, recovering from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2.
These two long games took a toll, with Serbia looking poor and lifeless in the final round, losing to Belgium in straight sets.
