Belgium’s basketball squad has not impressed in the tournament, notably grappling with underdogs like Puerto Rico. In contrast, Australia’s Opals have shown steadier form and present better prospects. The article highlights that, based on current performances, backing Australia for the win offers excellent value. Those considering bets are recommended to focus on the Opals given Belgium’s struggles and the Australians’ consistency.

Match Preview

The winner of this clash will be privileged to advance directly to the quarterfinals, so the stakes are high. Australia won the last two head-to-head meetings against Belgium, but the latest odds are favoring the European side.

Belgium Tagged Favorites

Belgium justified their role as favorites in their opening two World Cup 2026 matches and now are battling Australia for first place in Group C (direct placement to the quarterfinals).

They needed some time to break Turkey in the opening round on Friday, managing to do so in the third quarter (27-9) to take an 89-75 victory. WNBA superstar Emma Meesseman delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 27 points (12/21 FG shooting) while also registering nine rebounds and five assists.

Their shooting numbers were underwhelming against underdog Puerto Rico on Sunday (38%), but they still got away with a 76-64 victory. Maxuella Lisowa played the key role this time with 16 points.

Australia Looking to Claim Top Spot

Like their upcoming opponents, Australia already secured a spot in the playoff phase after starting the tournament with two straight victories.

The Opals' performance against heavy underdogs Puerto Rico was far from ideal, but they still claimed a convincing 70-54 victory in their first match, allowing just 24 points in the first half. Shephanie Talbot had an amazing performance with 19 points (7/9 FG shooting), eight rebounds and three assists.

Their offense did a much better job yesterday in an 87-71 victory against Turkey, shooting 61% from the field. Ezi Magbegor was named player of the match with 21 points (10/14 FG shooting).

Verdict

Belgium haven't shown more than Australia so far in the tournament, even struggling against underdog Puerto Rico yesterday. I see solid value in backing the Opals to win here.
