Following a disappointing loss to Sweden, Finland faces a critical match against Estonia. Historically, Finland has dominated this matchup, never losing to Estonia in a competitive game. To stay on course, Finland must secure a decisive victory in this fixture. The consensus is to back Finland to win on a handicap, underscoring their superior historical performance and the importance of bouncing back from their recent defeat.

Match Preview

Both sides suffered painful defeats in their Thursday qualifying matches and now look to get back on track in the Mundobasket 2027 qualifiers. Finland won the last H2H match 86-80 in August 2023.

Estonia Struggling for Form

Estonia have been in poor form recently, claiming just one victory in their last four WC qualifying matches and currently sitting in 5th place in Group L with a 3-4 record.

On paper, their Thursday clash against Hungary in Miskolc was supposed to be tight, but they were beaten convincingly 85-67, mainly due to a high number of turnovers (20).

Estonia played two friendly matches ahead of this qualifying window, surprisingly beating Lithuania 110-108 in overtime, where Kristian Kullamae landed the winning shot at the buzzer, followed by a convincing 83-61 loss to Italy.

Finland Looking to Recover

Finland were on a great path to secure a spot at the World Championship 2027 early after winning four of their opening five matches, but their form has declined recently, with the team currently sitting in 2nd place in Group L with a 4-3 record.

The Finns were tagged favorites in Thursday's home clash against Sweden but suffered an 86-81 defeat, mainly due to disastrous three-point shooting (8/33). Star player Lauri Markkanen had an awful performance, landing just 2 of his 13 shots.

Finland looked amazing in last year's EuroBasket, eliminating Serbia led by Nikola Jokic and almost winning a bronze medal, with Mikael Jantunen missing a game-deciding shot. Their star player Lauri Markkanen is also on the roster.

Verdict

Finland can't afford another defeat after slipping against Sweden. They have never lost to Estonia in a competitive match, and I will back them to win in handicap.
