This is going to be just the second appearance at the FIBA World Championship for Germany, and like the previous time in 1998, they qualified automatically as the host nation.
Japan Riding High After Mali Upset
Japan were tagged as heavy underdogs in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2026 opening match against Mali but snatched a surprising 102-97 victory, mainly thanks to great shooting numbers.
The Asian side fired 35 and landed 20 three-pointers. Nine of those were scored by Saki Hayashi, Japan's top scorer with 27 points. Kokoro Tanaka also made a big contribution with 18 points and seven assists.
Samurai entered the World Championship 2026 with high expectations after securing a silver medal at the Olympics in 2021, but suffered a disappointing group stage exit in the previous World Cup in 2022.
