Mercury’s Playoff Hopes Fading
Due to their awful form in the last two weeks, Phoenix Mercury’s chances of reaching the WNBA playoffs this year have been reduced to a minimum, currently sitting in 7th place in the Western Conference with 12 wins and 22 defeats.
After starting the month with a tight 94-92 home loss to New York Liberty, they shined offensively to take a 106-101 victory against Chicago Sky in Illinois, but failed to connect and lost to Atlanta Dream 96-82 in the follow-up.
Next was a super disappointing defeat against last-placed Connecticut Sun, 75-72, where they had just 39% shooting from the field and landed just 13 out of 23 free throws. Just 24 hours later, Phoenix were smashed by Washington 95-75 due to 16 turnovers and, once again, poor shooting.
Sparks Showing Signs of Life
Los Angeles Sparks have struggled throughout the season and remain well outside the playoff picture with a 12-20 record, needing a miracle in the remaining four weeks.
Speaking of their August form, the Californian side have had decent results, starting with a 106-101 road win against Portland Fire, then standing shoulder to shoulder against Chicago in Illinois but ultimately losing 95-88.
They were tagged massive underdogs against prime title contenders Minnesota Lynx but won 89-82 thanks to Dearica Hamby’s strong performance (16 points, 9 rebounds). The Sparks failed to build on this, though, losing to Golden State Valkyries 84-78 at home last weekend, mainly due to an awful first quarter (15-29).

Phoenix’s recent form has been disastrous, registering just one win in their last five games. Los Angeles are also far from ideal results, but recently took down the table leaders Minnesota, so I will back them to win at home tonight.
