Toronto Still Looking for Answers
Toronto Tempo are playing their inaugural WNBA season and have not looked like a serious playoff contender, winning just 10 of their 30 games and sitting sixth in the Eastern Conference.
After losing every game in the second half of July, they opened August with a 96-79 defeat to the Golden State Valkyries in San Francisco, making just seven of their 30 three-point attempts while committing 14 turnovers. Nyara Sabally led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds.
Toronto faced the Valkyries again at the same venue two nights ago and delivered a more competitive performance but still fell 92-82 after fading in the fourth quarter. They were outrebounded 38-27, which proved decisive.
Portland Hoping to End Their Slide
Like their upcoming opponents, Portland Fire are one of the league's newer franchises and have also struggled this season, winning just 11 of their 30 games to sit seventh in the Western Conference.
Portland endured a difficult second half of July, losing four straight games to Minnesota Lynx (101-93), Dallas Wings (101-97), Las Vegas Aces (98-83) and Indiana Fever (112-98).
Their first opportunity to end that run this month also ended in disappointment, suffering a 106-101 home defeat to Los Angeles Sparks. Portland led by six points at halftime but allowed 63 second-half points as their defensive issues resurfaced.
