Algeria and Senegal Women kick off their WAFCON 2024 campaigns with a crucial Group A encounter. Both sides have struggled for consistency in the build-up, but boast respectable overall records—Algeria are unbeaten in eight of their last ten games, while Senegal have lost just three of their last eight matches. Historically, Senegal have had the upper hand and will look to maintain their strong record, but Algeria’s resilience could see the teams cancel each other out, making a draw the likely outcome in this tightly-contested opener.

Algeria and Senegal begin their campaign at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations with a Group A clash on Sunday.

With neither team at their best heading into the tournament, they will be keen to avoid defeat in their opening fixture and could be set to cancel each other out.

Key Stats

  • Algeria Women are unbeaten in eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions.
  • Senegal Women are unbeaten in five of their last eight matches in all competitions.
  • Senegal Women are unbeaten in five of the last seven matches against Algeria Women.

Upper Hand for Senegal

Senegal have the upper hand in this fixture, having claimed five wins from seven matches while Algeria have been victorious twice. The most recent meeting was a friendly in 2025, which ended 3-0 in favour of the West Africans.

Patchy Build-Up for Algeria

Algeria have made just six appearances at the WAFCON, with the first coming in 2004. Their highest finish was a quarter-final berth in 2024, and they will be keen to improve on that feat this time around.

The North Africans have had a patchy build-up to the WAFCON, with just one win from their last four friendlies. The good news is that the win came in their final warm-up game as they edged out Zambia 1-0.

While things appear unconvincing for Algeria at the moment, a thorough look at their overall form reveals some solid showings. They are unbeaten in eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Senegal Looking Off Colour

Senegal made their first WAFCON appearance in 2012 and have gone on to play in only three tournaments. They reached the quarter-finals in the last two editions and will be targeting a similar run this year.

One problem for Senegal heading into their Group A opener is that their recent form has been unconvincing. They have lost three of their last four matches, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Egypt in their final warm-up game.

As evidenced by their recent WAFCON runs, Senegal seem to get their act together at major tournaments. A look at their overall form also shows they are unbeaten in five of their last eight matches in all competitions.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

Algeria Women (4-3-3): Chloe N’gazi; Morgane Belkhiter, Sofia Guellati, Lana Smits, Roselene, Khezami; Marine Dafeur, Amira Braham, Melissa Bethi; Ines Khiri, Ikram Adjabi, Sofia Bekhaled.

Algeria have a fully fit squad heading into their opening game and could stick with the team that won against Zambia. Adjabi should feature in attack alongside Bekhaled and Khiri while Guellati is set to continue in defence.

Senegal Women (4-3-3): Khady Faye; Aminata Ba, Wolimata Ndiaye, Adama Sane, Mereme Babou; Safietou Sagna, Fatoumata Drame, Ndeye Diakhate; Mama Diop, Nguenar Ndiaye, Khadija Badio.

Senegal are expected to retain much of the team that faced Egypt, with Ndiaye and Sane expected to continue in defence. Ndiaye should also feature in attack, with Badio and Diop providing support.

Verdict

Senegal are hoping to find their rhythm on Sunday and will be counting on their solid record in this fixture.

Given their overall solid form, Algeria can also hold their own here, and both teams could be set to cancel each other out.
