Burkina Faso vs Tanzania Women WAFCON review

Tanzania are aiming to build on a solid win in their opening fixture when they battle Burkina Faso in their second Group B clash at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations.

The Twiga Stars will be full of confidence and should get the better of their rivals, who have been out of sorts lately.

Key Stats

  • Burkina Faso have failed to win their last eight matches in all competitions.
  • Tanzania are unbeaten in four of their last five matches in all competitions.

No Previous Meetings

This will be the first ever meeting between Burkina Faso and Tanzania at this level.

Burkina Faso Below their Best

Burkina Faso made a poor start to the tournament as they were thrashed 4-1 by Ivory Coast in their opening fixture. They fell four goals down and could only manage a late consolation from Adama Congo after goalkeeper Faouzia Ouedraogo was sent off.

It was a bad defeat in a difficult group for Burkina Faso, who now have a mountain to climb if they are to survive. The task will be to get things back on track and also attempt to cut down the goal difference.

The problem for Burkina Faso is that the defeat to Ivory Coast is an extension of their form heading into the tournament. Pascal Sawadogo’s team are now without a win in their last eight matches in all competitions.

Tanzania Brimming with Confidence

Tanzania began their campaign with a surprise 2-1 victory over former champions South Africa. Diana Msewa struck the opener midway through the first half while Hasnath Mbamba netted the winner three minutes from time.

It was an impressive start to the tournament and puts them in a solid position to qualify to the knockout stage. With heavyweights South Africa and Ivory Coast squaring off in the other fixture, the Twiga Stars have a chance to take control of the group.

The victory over South Africa extends a decent run of form for Tanzania, stretching to their build-up to the tournament. Bakari Shime’s team are unbeaten in four of their last five matches in all competitions.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

Burkina Faso (4-4-2): Nina Dabilogou; Safiatou Sam, Madinatou Rouamba, Stephanie Zida, Madina Traore; Balkissa Sawadogo, Delwende Judicael, Alimata Belem, Adama Congo; Adele Kabre, Deborah Guira.

Burkina Faso will be without Ouedraogo, who is suspended after being sent off in the opening fixture. Dabilogou is expected to get the nod between the sticks while Kabre and Guira should continue in attack.

Tanzania (3-1-4-2): Najet Idrissa; Ester Maseke, Violet Mwamakamba, Julitha Singano; Anastazia Katunzi; Enekia Lunyamila, Diana Msewa, Aisha Mnunka, Donisia Minja; Opah Clement, Rashid Mwalala.

Tanzania are not expected to make changes to their team and should retain the same side that beat South Africa. Msewa should feature in midfield while Clement and Mwalala are set to continue in attack.

Verdict

Tanzania will be full of confidence after beating former champions South Africa in their opening fixture.

Their overall form is also generally solid, and they should have the upper hand over Burkina Faso, who have found things difficult lately.
