Cruz Azul face Club Leon at Estadio Banorte in Liga MX, with a home win and both teams to score plus over 2.5 goals tipped. Cruz Azul have won three consecutive league matches, netting 16 goals in their last five games, and hold a strong head-to-head advantage, winning 13 of their last 16 meetings with Leon. Both teams have struggled defensively, with Cruz Azul conceding an average of 1.77 goals per game and Leon keeping only two clean sheets in their last nine league matches. High-scoring action is expected based on recent form and history.

Cruz Azul vs Club Leon Predictions

Cruz Azul face Club Leon at Estadio Banorte in Sunday's Liga MX fixture.

The hosts have returned to top form with three consecutive league victories, while Leon remain have struggled to find consistency this month.

I have stakes on a home win and BTTS/Over 2.5 goals.

High-Scoring Home Win Likely

  • Cruz Azul won their last 3 matches
  • Cruz Azul scored an average of 3.2 goals per game in their last 6 matches
  • Cruz Azul have seen BTTS & over 2.5 goals in 5 of their last 7 matches (Liga MX)
  • Club Leon have seen BTTS & over 2.5 goals in their last 8 matches against Cruz Azul
  • Club Leon lost 6 of their last 7 away matches against Cruz Azul

Cruz Azul Hold Recent H2H Advantage

Cruz Azul and Club Leon have met 16 times since 2020, with Cruz Azul claiming 13 victories. Leon secured only two wins, while one match finished level.

Leon picked up a 2-1 home victory in their most recent meeting in January.

An average of 3.75 goals per game was scored in their last eight encounters since February 2024.

Cruz Azul Extend Winning Streak

Cruz Azul return to Mexico City after an excellent 3-1 win against Queretaro last weekend.

Andres Montano opened the scoring with a first-half penalty before Mateo Coronel equalised for Queretaro. Nicolas Ibanez restored Cruz Azul's advantage before half-time, with Christian Ebere adding a third in first-half stoppage time.

La Maquina were good value for their impressive away win. Cruz Azul enjoyed slightly more possession (52-48%) and registered more shots (14-10). The visitors also recorded a higher xG total (1.67-1.18) and created more big chances (2-0).

Last weekend's away victory extended Azul's winning run to three league matches after a 2-1 success at Pachuca and a dominant 5-0 home success against Juarez in the past fortnight.

Joel Huiqui's side have been brilliant in front of goal in recent weeks. Cruz Azul scored 16 goals in their last five fixtures, while they have bagged 3+ goals in six of nine previous Liga MX matches.

While the hosts have had little trouble in the forward area, defensive lapses remain a major concern. Azul conceded an average of 1.77 goals per game across 14 league fixtures this season.

Fourteen games into the Apertura, Huiqui's men sit second in the division, two points behind leaders Club America.

Club Leon Held by Toluca

Club Leon return to Liga MX action after a 1-1 home draw against Toluca last weekend.

Jose Alfonso Alvarado put the hosts ahead in the 12th minute before Federico Vinas equalised shortly before half-time.

Leon registered only 37% possession but had more shots (16-14) and created significantly more big chances (5-1). The hosts also recorded a higher xG total (1.71-1.22), but were unable to find a winner at Estadio Leon.

A lack of consistency has been a big issue for La Fiera. Before their draw with Toluca, Leon had picked up an excellent 2-0 away win against Tigres after a 5-3 home defeat against Club America.

Since August, Javier Gandolfi's men have won three, drawn three and lost two of eight competitive fixtures.

Like the hosts, defensive vulnerabilities remain a serious issue. Leon leaked 12 goals in their last eight fixtures, while they have kept only two clean sheets in their last nine Liga MX encounters.

The visitors come into this weekend's contest currently sixth in the division, four points behind Cruz Azul.

Cruz Azul vs Club Leon Team News

Cruz Azul: (4-2-3-1) Andres Gudino; Rogelio Gonzalez, Gonzalo Piovi, Jesus Orozco, Omar Campos; Amaury Garcia, Erik Lira; Agustin Palavecino, Andres Montano, Christian Ebere; Nicolas Ibanez.

Cruz Azul head coach Joel Huiqui has several injury issues this weekend. Willer Ditta, Amaury Morales, Mateo Levy and Christian Jimenez are expected to miss out against Leon.

Jose Paradela has returned to training following a muscle injury and could feature on Sunday.

Joint-top scorer Nicolas Ibanez is expected to lead the home attack. The Argentine forward has scored five Liga MX goals this season.

Club Leon: (4-1-4-1) Oscar Garcia; Ivan Moreno, Jhohan Romana, Sebastian Vegas, Juan Guevara; Rodrigo Echeverria; Edgar Guerra, Fernando Beltran, Daniel Arcila, Ismael Diaz; Jose Alfonso Alvarado.

Club Leon head coach Javier Gandolfi also has some injury concerns this weekend. Luis Valadez and Angel Estrada are expected to miss out through injury.

Jose Alvarado is likely to lead the visitors' attack. The 26-year-old forward has scored five league goals this season.

Verdict

Cruz Azul have been in excellent form this month, and they should get the better of Leon in a likely high-scoring Liga MX matchup.

A home win is my first pick, while I also expect BTTS and over 2.5 goals scored at Estadio Banorte.
