Newcastle have drawn their opening two games of the A-League season with the Mariners (2-2) and last week against Macarthur (1-1).

The Jets were then thumped on Tuesday night by Kyoto Sanga on Matchday 3 of the ACL Elite, blowing a fortuitous 2-0 lead courtesy of two penalties before falling 5-2.

Wellington Phoenix Form

Historic start to the season for Wellington - they've won their opening two A-League games for the first time to lead the competition heading into Round 3.

It's been a dream start for Chris Greenacre's side, with the Nix conquering Australia Cup finalists Melbourne Victory in Round 1 before last week's 2-0 dispatch of Central Coast.

The Nix have made the most of a good draw with two home games against a fatigued Victory and a Mariners side full of kids - now they get another advantageous spot against a Jets side playing their third match in a week and returning from Japan.
