Dundee United face Rangers at Tannadice to kick off the 2026-27 Scottish Premiership. Rangers, under new manager Derek McInnes, are tipped to secure a winning start amid substantial squad changes. Dundee United, though buoyed by recent League Cup form, have a poor H2H against the Gers, who are unbeaten in 13 league games versus the Tannadice side. McInnes emphasizes the importance of overcoming last season's defensive issues. Expect an entertaining contest with Rangers likely to edge it, both teams scoring, and over 1.5 goals predicted.

Dundee United vs Rangers Predictions

Dundee United and Rangers kick off the 2026-27 Scottish Premiership season at Tannadice on Friday evening.

The Tangerines enjoyed a productive League Cup campaign earlier this month, but they face a significant step up in class against Derek McInnes’ revamped Rangers squad.

I fancy the Gers to make a winning start to their season, with at least two goals scored, while we could see both teams to score at Tannadice.

Rangers Backed to Win Entertaining Contest

  • Dundee United have seen over 1.5 goals in 13 of their last 16 matches (competitive fixtures)
  • Dundee United lost 8 of their last 11 matches against Rangers
  • Rangers have seen BTTS in their last 6 matches against Dundee United
  • Rangers have seen over 1.5 goals in their last 8 matches (competitive fixtures)
  • Rangers conceded 1+ goals in 12 of their last 14 matches (competitive fixtures)

Rangers Dominate Recent H2H Record

Rangers have enjoyed a dominant recent record against Dundee United, remaining unbeaten in the last 13 Premiership meetings between the clubs.

The Gers claimed nine victories during that run, with four encounters finishing level.

Dundee United have not beaten Rangers since securing a 1-0 victory at Tannadice in August 2021.

Dundee United Target Top-Six Return

Dundee United come into Friday’s Premiership opener after a mixed pre-season campaign saw them win three and lose two of five games completed.

The Tangerines successfully navigated their League Cup section, finishing top of Group B with nine points, despite a shock 1-0 loss at Montrose.

Jim Goodwin’s side responded with comfortable wins against Arbroath (3-0) and the Spartans (4-0) before a 3-2 friendly defeat against Salford City last weekend brought their winning run to an end.

Dundee United endured a disappointing 2025-26 campaign after finishing seventh in the Scottish Premiership.

Goodwin’s side narrowly missed out on a place in the top six, having previously secured an impressive fourth-place finish during their first season back in the top flight.

McInnes Begins Rangers Rebuild

Rangers begin another new era after appointing former Hearts and Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes during the summer.

McInnes replaced Danny Rohl following a disappointing campaign which saw the Gers finish third in the Premiership.

The Gers have completed two pre-season contests under the 55-year-old, picking up a 2-1 victory against Saint-Etienne before holding Premier League side West Ham to a goalless draw last weekend.

Worryingly, Rangers have failed to win their opening Premiership match in each of the last three seasons, with their most recent opening-day victory coming against Livingston in 2022.

Defensive frailties proved the biggest issue for the Glasgow giants, particularly at the back end of last season. The Gers leaked 17 goals in their last seven Premiership fixtures, with at least two goals conceded in all of those matches.

Still, McInnes boasts an impressive personal record against Dundee United, winning six and drawing three of his last nine managerial meetings against the Tangerines.

Dundee United vs Rangers Team News

Dundee United: (4-3-3) Jack Walton; Amar Fatah Naamo, Iurie Iovu, Owen Stirton Forbes, Will Ferry; Panutche Camara, Dylan Tait, Jeppe Eskesen; Jesse Randall, Lachlan Rose, Zac Sapsford.

Head coach Goodwin is expected to be without Miller Thomson, who remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

Goodwin has added nine new players to his squad this summer as United target a return to the top six and another challenge for European qualification.

Newcastle Jets recruit Lachlan Rose is likely to start after scoring three times during the League Cup group stage.

The Australian forward could be joined by fellow summer arrivals Jesse Randall and Zac Sapsford in the front three.

Rangers: (4-2-3-1) Ivor Pandur; Dujon Sterling, Emmanuel Fernandez, Ben Godfrey, Tuur Rommens; Dan Neil, Cameron Devlin; Findlay Curtis, Lawrence Shankland, Djeidi Gassama; Youssef Chermiti.

Rangers manager McInnes has overseen a substantial squad overhaul, with Lawrence Shankland, Dan Neil, Cameron Devlin, Vanja Dragojevic, Ross McCrorie, Ben Godfrey and goalkeeper Ivor Pandur joinining the club this summer.

Shankland has been appointed as the club’s new captain following the departure of long-serving skipper James Tavernier. The Scottish international forwad is expected to make his competitive debut as captain, potentially operating behind Chermiti in attack.

Nicolas Raskin will miss the trip to Tannadice after being granted additional recovery time following his involvement at the World Cup.

Cammy Devlin and Thelo Aasgaard have recovered from minor issues suffered against West Ham and should be available for selection.

Speaking ahead of Rangers’ Premiership opener, McInnes stressed the importance of beginning the new campaign positively.

“We need to feel excited about a new season starting. This is a real opportunity for us to start as we mean to go on,” he said.

“It’s been well documented that Rangers haven’t started the first game of the season well for a number of years, and the cards have dealt us a tough fixture. But it’s very rare that you get an easy fixture away from home.

“It will be tough going to Tannadice, but it’s important that Dundee United have a tougher game than we do. We’ve got to turn up on Friday and do our jobs well.

“Pre-season friendlies serve their purpose, but I’m glad they’re over, and we can get down to the real stuff.”

Verdict

Rangers will be determined to make a winning start to their Premiership campaign but can expect a tricky test at Tannadice.

Still, the Glasgow giants have strengthened and should have enough quality to claim an important away victory.

I have a stake on Rangers to win with over 1.5 goals, while I also like the BTTS selection.
