Senegal and Kenya will face off in their second Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Group A match, both aiming for their first win after disappointing starts. Recent stats show both sides have been struggling in attack—Senegal failed to score in three of their last four, while Kenya blanked in four of their last seven. Historically, the majority of each team’s recent matches have seen fewer than 2.5 goals. Expect a tightly contested, low-scoring encounter between two teams under pressure to improve.

Senegal vs Kenya Women WAFCON Preview

Senegal and Kenya are seeking their first win at the Women's Africa Cup of Nations when they meet in their second Group A clash on Thursday.

Both teams have been plagued by attacking issues lately and could be set to serve up a low-scoring encounter.

Key Stats

  • Seven of Senegal's last 10 matches in all competitions have produced under 2.5 goals.
  • Senegal have failed to score in three of their last four matches in all competitions.
  • Seven of Kenya's last 10 matches in all competitions have produced over 2.5 goals.
  • Kenya have failed to score in four of their last seven matches in all competitions.

No Previous Meetings

This will be the first ever meeting between Senegal and Kenya at this level.

Senegal's Scoring Problems

Senegal began their WAFCON campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Algeria. They saw a decent amount of the ball and created a few chances but could only manage two shots on target.

It was a poor start to the tournament for Senegal and the result is also consistent with their recent showings. The Teranga Lionesses have lost four of their last five matches in all competitions.

One of the problems for Senegal lately is a lack of cutting edge in attack, having failed to score in three of their last four matches in all competitions. Seven of the last 10 matches for Mame Cisse’s team have produced under 2.5 goals.

Kenya Looking Unconvincing

Kenya were also disappointing in their opening fixture, falling to a 4-0 defeat to hosts Morocco. They showed a few flashes but were ultimately no match for the superior quality of the North Africans.

That result is part of a recent poor run for Kenya, who have been below their best lately. Beldine Odemba’s team have failed to win seven of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Like Senegal, Kenya are also unconvincing in attack, failing to score in four of their last seven matches in all competitions. Seven of their last 10 matches in all competitions have produced under 2.5 goals.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

Senegal (4-4-2): Khady Faye; Adama Sane, Wolimata Ndiaye, Mbayang Sow, Marieme Babou; Nguenar Ndiaye, Sokhna Pene, Aissatou Fall, Ndeye Casset; Mama Diop, Korka Fall.

Pene showed a few flashes off the bench in Senegal's opening fixture and could earn a start in midfield. Diop and Fall should continue their attacking partnership while Ndiaye is set to feature in central defence.

Kenya (4-3-3): Lilian Awuor; Euphraiser Shilwatso, Elizabeth Ochaka, Ruth Ingosi, Leah Andiema; Martha Amunyolet, Terry Engesha, Mwanalima Jereko; Eglay Mukhwana, Valerie Nekesa, Fasila Adhiambo.

Shilwatso was a halftime substitute for Kenya in the opening fixture and could play from the start on Thursday. Engesha is expected to continue in midfield while Adhiambo is set to feature in attack.

Verdict

Senegal and Kenya showed a lack of attacking quality in their opening fixtures.

This trait has been consistent in several of their recent matches, and Thursday's clash is expected to be a low-scoring contest.
