H2H - Toon on Top

Newcastle have a 35-18 advantage against Coventry, alongside 17 draws.

Coventry Often Second Best in the EPL

Frank Lampard’s Coventry have lost four of their first five Premier League matches this season. The newly promoted side have scored just one league goal so far.

The Sky Blues are on a three-match losing streak at home. Coventry lost against Hull 1-0, Brighton 5-0 and Aston Villa 3-1, allowing over 2 XG in two of those games.

The Midlands outfit sealed their first win of the season with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest before the international break. Coventry had -1 XG, faced 24 shots and Jay Dasilva scored a 55th-minute winner.

Newcastle Building Strong Form Under Jaissle

Newcastle have been tough to beat early in the 2026/27 campaign. The Toon are undefeated in six of their last seven, winning four.

The Tyneside outfit were on a two-match winning streak on the road, defeating Tottenham 2-0 and Millwall 1-0. Matthias Jaissle’s team then suffered their only loss of the campaign after a 4-1 loss at Leeds.

The Magpies hit back and beat Hull 2-1 at home in the Premier League. Joe Willock and Lewis Hall scored in the opening seven minutes and Newcastle had 57% possession and 1.44 XG.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Coventry (3-4-2-1): Carl Rushworth; Stephen Mfuni, Bobby Thomas, Ethan Pinnock; Caleb Yirenkyi, Frank Onyeka, Matt Grimes, Jay Dasilva; Jack Rudoni, Ephron Mason-Clark; Brandon Thomas-Asante

Striker Taiwo Awoniyi is suspended. Josh Eccles is an injury doubt and Frank Lampard said the midfielder is still “a few weeks” away from returning.

Forward Haji Wright and defenders Luke Woolfenden and Aurele Amenda are out with long-term injuries.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Lukas Hornicek; Lewis Miley, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall; Sean Steur, Joe Willock; Jacob Murphy, Matias Fernandez-Pardo, Harvey Barnes; Yoane Wissa

Defender Tino Livramento, forward Anthony Elanga, midfielder Jacob Ramsey and goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen are ruled out.

Midfield pair Joelinton and Nico Gonzalez and defender Dan Burn are likely to return after recent injuries. Matthias Jaissle explained that the club would ease Joelinton back into action and said:

"Joey is progressing well, he is doing better. We need to be smart in our load management."

Verdict

Coventry have struggled against mid-to-upper-table Premier League opponents at home this season. Newcastle are a strong side and can show their quality in a likely away win here.
