In a much-anticipated Premier League clash, Newcastle United and Aston Villa prepare to face off in what promises to be a highly competitive match. Both teams exhibit strong current form, with Newcastle honing their fortress-like presence at St James' Park and Villa maintaining excellent away momentum. Historical head-to-head results slightly favor Newcastle, but Aston Villa's resilience on the road levels the playing field. Key players' fitness updates show both teams grappling with injuries. A draw appears to be the most probable result, reflecting the closely matched skill levels of these teams.

Newcastle have a 76-60 advantage against Aston Villa, alongside 40 draws.

Newcastle Are Strong at St James’

Newcastle have been tough to beat lately and have avoided defeat in six of their last seven games. The Toon have lost just once in their previous 15 at home, winning 11.

Eddie Howe’s side won three consecutive Premier League matches and beat Burnley 3-1, Palace 2-0 and Leeds 4-3. The Magpies then drew 2-2 with Bournemouth, lost 2-0 against Man City and were held to a goalless stalemate at Wolves.

Howe’s team ended that min-winless run with a 3-0 home victory against PSV in the Champions League. Newcastle were in control with 2.4 XG and Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes scored.

Aston Villa Have Momentum on the Road

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa are third in the Premier League and seven points behind Arsenal. The Villans are undefeated in 12 of their last 15 league matches.

Villa are in solid away form and unbeaten in three on the road, including a 0-0 draw at Palace and a 2-1 win at Tottenham. Emery’s side followed those results with a narrow 1-0 home loss to Everton.

The Midlands outfit hit back with a 1-0 away win at Fenerbahce in the Europa League. Jadon Sancho netted the winner after 25 minutes and Villa had 1.69 XG.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Newcastle (4-3-3): Nick Pope; Kieran Trippier, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall; Jacob Ramsey, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton; Harvey Barnes, Yoane Wissa, Anthony Gordon

Defender Dan Burn and striker William Osula will face late fitness tests to feature on Sunday. Forward Jacob Murphy and defensive trio Fabian Schar, Tino Livramento and Emil Krafth are injured.

Bruno Guimaraes is also an injury doubt for the Villa clash. Eddie Howe gave a pre-match update on the midfielder and said, “We hope it is not serious…We will try and make the right decision with Bruno - he is a pivotal player.”

Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Emiliano Martinez; Matty Cash, Ezri Konsa, Pau Torres, Lucas Digne; Lamare Bogarde, Youri Tielemans; Jadon Sancho, Morgan Rogers, Emiliano Buendia; Ollie Watkins

Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is likely to return after missing the Fenerbahce game with a calf injury. Midfielders John McGinn and Boubacar Kamara are unavailable with ankle issues.

Ross Barkley is nearing a return but remains unavailable for the Newcastle trip. Unai Emery is expecting the midfielder to be available in the coming weeks and said, “Barkley is training individually, but close to being with the group, maybe next week.”

Verdict

Newcastle are a hard-to-beat side at St James’ Park and Aston Villa rarely lose away. A close-fought Premier League match is expected and a draw has value.
