3 Premier League Managers Who May Soon Reach The End Of The Road
As Oliver Glasner announces his departure from Crystal Palace at the end of the season, the managerial chessboard is quickly shifting. Eddie Howe is navigating constraints at Newcastle despite achieving Champions League qualifications and a historic Carabao Cup victory. However, he faces growing unease from fans due to inconsistent league performances. Marco Silva has brought stability to Fulham but may explore opportunities, possibly at Tottenham. Meanwhile, Andoni Iraola's future at Bournemouth hangs in balance amidst interest from major clubs, reflecting on challenges within the club's current cycle.
- Oliver Glasner to leave Crystal Palace, sparking managerial changes.
- Eddie Howe faces pressure at Newcastle despite past success.
- Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola eye potential club transitions.
With Oliver Glasner announcing his departure from Crystal Palace at the end of the season, the already fluid managerial market now has another participant looking for work in just a few months from now. But who is next in line to depart?
Names such as Xabi Alonso are lurking in the shadows waiting for a big opportunity to appear, as the situation at Liverpool under Arne Slot changes from week to week. A positive result and all seems fine on Merseyside, dropped points and the mood becomes rather gloomy once again.
But what about the managers who may have hit at a ceiling at their current surroundings? Do they know when to move at the right time or could they end up staying a season too long - a decision that could end up tainting their legacy.
Eddie Howe - Newcastle
The richest owners in the world, perversely not the richest club. The conundrum that Newcastle’s owners face. A point of tension that trickles down to manager Eddie Howe. His Saudi paymasters want to be the absolute best; financial restrictions do not allow them to get there.
Which means Howe and his trusted assistant Jason Tindall have been working with one hand behind their back since they were installed on Tyneside in November 2021. That being said, they have done an incredible job with what they have been given.
While they have given the loyal Newcastle fanbase two stints in the Champions League and more importantly, the holy grail of major silverware. Their Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool last season 70 years in the making.
However, you are only as good as your last campaign and as loyal as Newcastle’s support is, it is fair to say that the natives have begun to get restless these past few months. Away form far from good enough in the league, absorbed by much better showings at St James’ Park.
A pattern of results that you feel is not quite sustainable in the long run and although those who follow the Magpies are always happy with a home win, the knives seemingly get sharper with every failure on the road.
Which almost puts Howe in a status of statis at present, one that sees his players take one step forward one week and a step back the next. The next logical step for the current Newcastle boss is to become the England boss after the 2026 World Cup.
Marco Silva - Fulham
With Thomas Frank’s situation at Tottenham certainly worth monitoring over the next few weeks, one name that has been mentioned as a potential replacement is Marco Silva - a name that has not gained universal cheer from Spurs fans.
However, the linking of the former Watford and Everton manager to a move across the capital does raise another question. Has Silva taken Fulham as far as he realistically can and if so, where would be his next coaching outpost?
After a slow start to the season and an even slower period of activity in last Summer’s transfer window, the Cottagers have managed to click into gear - a run of six league games undefeated ended by a late loss at Leeds last Saturday.
The West London outfit now sit comfortably in midtable and with 31 points to their name at the time of writing, their membership to the top flight of English football will surely continue through to the start of the 2026/27 campaign.
This would mean another Summer transfer window to work within, how they operated only recently may be enough for Marco Silva to believe that maybe the club cannot meet the ambition that he undoubtedly possesses.
The fact that he has spent four and a half years at Craven Cottage is an almost herculean stint when compared to his tenures at both Vicarage Road and Goodison Park beforehand, you would not blame the also former Hull boss for having itchy feet right now.
Feet that may only need a short walk across London if the Tottenham job does materialise sooner rather than later. Even if that route ends up being closed due to no desire to change or change from elsewhere, the 48-year-old could easily take a different route out of Fulham.
Andoni Iraola - Bournemouth
There is absolutely no doubt that Bournemouth play football that is very easy on the eye, the only issue that the brand under manager Andoni Iraola is not quite delivering the necessary results. The Cherries may be unbeaten in their last two, they had not won any of their previous 11 league games.
A run that had certainly asked questions of the Spaniard’s future, not necessarily the suggestion that the time to move on was at the start of January but whether this was the beginning of the end for this current Bournemouth cycle.
The former Rayo Vallecano manager is often linked with moves up the coaching food chain. Liverpool, Manchester United and even Real Madrid have had whispers attached to his name, these conversations do not come about by accident.
Which may suggest that the 43-year-old has had his head turned. Even at the slightest of angles, you can understand why this would be the case. A case that is arguably two-fold when it comes to its reasoning.
First, the Cherries place in the hierarchy of English and European football is lower down the totem pole when compared to the clubs mentioned above. Any thoughts of aspiration from a young coach are only natural.
Second, he, like others will wonder just how long Bournemouth’s powers of regeneration can continue. They lost three of their recognised starting back four in the summer, they have now lost Antoine Semenyo to Manchester City.
Iraola’s stock on the South Coast is still very high but now he will have a decision to make in terms of when to cash in his chips. In an ideal world, he makes that decision for himself. The worst case scenario is that the club’s board eventually make it for him.
