Melbourne City, fresh from securing a place in the knockout phase of the AFC Champions League after a notable win against Ulsan, are eager to continue their unbeaten streak. Coach Aurelio Vidmar praised his youthful side's determination and resilience. Meanwhile, Gangwon faces pressure to secure a victory on the final matchday to advance, as their recent outings have been less than stellar. Despite dominating possession against Shanghai Port, they failed to capitalize and now look for a turnaround against Melbourne City.

Melbourne City vs Gangwon Preview

Melbourne City can wrap up a top two finish in the group phase and I'm backing them to do by maintaining their unbeaten run in the AFC Champions League Elite.

City have picked up 13 points from the last five matches and are up to fourth spot. They have been hard to beat in this competition lately and can avoid defeat once again.
  • Melbourne City are unbeaten in their last 5 ACL games
  • Gangwon have won 2 of their 7 ACL games
  • Melbourne City have seen under 2.5 goals in 11 of their last 16 games in all competitions
  • Gangwon have seen under 2.5 goals in 6 of their last 8 games
  • Gangwon have drawn their last 2 ACL games
  • Melbourne City have drawn 2 of their last 3 games in all competitions

Melbourne City vs Gangwon FC Head To Head

This will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs.

Melbourne City On An Unbeaten Run

It's been a remarkable run for City as the reigning A-League champions secured their spot in the knockout phase with a thrilling 2-1 win over Ulsan last week on the road.

City are now the first Australian team since 2020 to qualify for the knockout phase of the Asian Champions League Elite.

“We are very, very young side, and to be able to get to the next round is a true testament of the right attitude and the characters of players that we have here in this group, " City coach Aurelio Vidmar said after the win over Ulsan.
“So (I’m) pleased for the players and also very pleased for the club.”

Max Caputo scored his third goal of the campaign in the win over Ulsan, with winger Marcus Younis volleying home the winner in stoppage time.

Younis has now scored three goals and registered one assist in four appearances for City since joining on loan from Danish club Brondby.

City aren't travelling as well in the A-League this term, winning just two of their last 10 games to be languishing in seventh spot on the table.

Gangwon Need A Win To Stand A Chance

Gangwon have put themselves in a must-win position on the final matchday in order to guarantee their place in the knockout phase.

Chung Kyung-ho's side have gone winless in their last four Champions League outings, suffering defeats to top two sides Sanfrecce and Machida before back-to-back draws against Buriram and Shanghai Port.

Gangwon missed a golden opportunity to secure their top eight spot with a home game against last-placed Shanghai Port, but they couldn't convert their chances, dominating with 62 per cent of possession and 11 total shots to two.

Although, to be fair, it was Gangwon's first competitive match of the year after they finished last season's K-League in November, where they ended up in sixth spot on the ladder.

Verdict

City are tipped to extend their unbeaten run in the Champions League in a game that sees Under 2.5 goals.
