Morocco opens their WAFCON 2024 campaign at home against Kenya, aiming to finally secure the elusive title after two consecutive finals. The North African side boasts a nine-match unbeaten streak and a history of winning by significant margins, making them favorites for this Group A opener. Kenya, while confident after a recent win, lacks experience at this level and has struggled for consistency. With more depth and home advantage, Morocco is strongly tipped for victory.

Morocco begin their campaign to finally get their hands on the WAFCON title as they face Kenya in a Group A clash.

The North Africans are becoming a powerhouse in women's football and should be too strong for their rivals, who have been below their best lately.

Key Stats

  • Morocco are unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions.
  • Morocco have won by two or more goals in six of their last nine matches in all competitions.
  • Kenya have failed to win six of their last eight matches in all competitions.

One Previous Meeting

The only previous meeting between Morocco and Kenya was a friendly back in 2025, which ended 5-1 in favour of the North Africans.

Morocco Chasing Glory

Morocco have built a reputation as one of the major players in Women's football and have reached the finals of the last two WAFCONs. As hosts of this year's tournament, they will be keen to go all the way this time and finally get their hands on the elusive title.

The build-up to the tournament has been solid enough for Morocco, who are unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions. They claimed a 5-0 victory over Cape Verde in their final warm-up game on Tuesday.

Morocco are solid going forward and often secure one-sided results like the win over Cape Verde. They have won by two or more goals in six of their last nine matches in all competitions.

Kenya Inexperienced at This Level

Kenya are inexperienced at this level of football, having made just one previous appearance at the WAFCON. They played in the 2016 edition and crashed out in the group stage.

Despite their WAFCON inexperience, Kenya will head into their Group A opener with some confidence. Their last fixture was a 6-0 victory over Lesotho in a friendly back in June.

While Kenya will take confidence from that result, their overall form has been unconvincing lately. They are winless in six of their last eight matches in all competitions, suffering four defeats in this run.

Team News and Predicted Line-ups

Morocco Women (4-3-3): Khadija Er-Rmichi; Hanan Ait El Haj, Nahila Benzina, Azziza Rabbah, Zineb Redouani; Nadjat Badri, Yasmine Mrabet, Ghizlane Chebbak; Sanaa Mssoudy, Ibtissam Jraidi, Fatima Tagnaout.

Morocco have retained many of their players from the last WAFCON, and captain Chebbak is expected to hold the fort in midfield. Benzina should start at the back while Mssoudy is set to feature in attack.

Kenya Women (4-3-3): Annedy Kundu; Ruth Ingosi, Vivian Nasaka, Leah Andiema, Fasila Adhiambo; Mwanalima Jereko, Eglay Mukhwana, Elizabeth Ochaka; Violet Wanyonyi, Terry Engesha, Martha Amunyolet.

Kenya are likely to stick with much of the team that won against Lesotho, with Nasaka and Andiema set to continue their central defensive partnership. Jereko should feature in midfield while Wanyonyi is set to start in attack.

Verdict

Given the contrasting levels of experience of both teams at the WAFCON, Sunday's clash is likely to be a mismatch.

Morocco have a knack for one-sided results and should claim a dominant win over Kenya.
