Benfica has a commanding track record against Nacional, having secured victories in both clashes last season. With a strong historical performance and consistent clean sheets, Benfica is anticipated to dominate the upcoming game. Nacional, currently struggling mid-table in Primeira Liga, has shown inconsistent form, while Benfica is thriving, unbeaten in the league and recently victorious in European competitions. The predicted lineups reveal crucial player roles, underscoring Benfica's strategic edge, aimed at securing another decisive win.

Nacional Mid-Table in the Primeira Liga

Nacional haven’t won in four games, a 1-1 draw at Estoril followed by a deserved 1-0 loss against Famalicao with Ze Vitor sent off in the second half.

The Madeira club earned another 1-1 draw on the road in the Primeira Liga, at Estrela da Amadora which leaves them 10th on the table.

Tiago Margarido’s side were eliminated from the Portuguese Cup on Sunday following a 4-2 defeat at Braga. Down 3-0 at half-time, goals to Miguel Baeza and Chuchu Ramírez got them back into the contest before conceding in the 87th minute.

Margarido was disappointed with the attitude of this team in the first half, saying: “Clearly, we didn't start with the right attitude. The attitude (in the 2nd half) was clearly different, we reached 3-2 deservedly, could have equalised and managed to keep the game open until the end. The victory is ultimately fair for Braga, in a game with two distinct halves.”

Benfica Winning with Clean Sheets

Benfica have won five of their previous seven matches, all five victories coming with a clean sheet. They remain unbeaten in the Primeira Liga where they sit third, six points behind Porto.

Jose Mourinho’s side are alive in four competitions after registering a 2-0 win at Atletico CP in the Portuguese Cup. They left it late against the third division side, Richard Rios and Vangelis Pavlidis scoring in the final 20 minutes.

The Eagles lost their first four matches in the Champions League, the run including home defeats to Qarabag and Bayer Leverkusen. Benfica corrected that at Ajax on Tuesday, Samuel Dahl and Leandro Barreiro scoring in a 2-0 victory in Amsterdam.

Mourinho was pleased with the way his side controlled the closing stages, saying: “The feeling in the last 15 minutes was that, even if it were 150 minutes, they still wouldn't score. That solidity of the team, the effort and concentration of the players, the joy of the group after the victory, those are beautiful things.”

Predicted Lineups & Team News

Nacional (4-3-3) Lucas Franca; Joao Aurelio, Leonardo Santos, Ze Vítor, Jose Gomes; Igor Liziero, Matheus Dias, Chiheb Labidi; Witi Quembo, Jesus Ramirez, Paulo Boia

Centre back Ivanildo Fernandes is injured, but Ulysses Wilson is getting close to returning and Ze Vítor is available after suspension. Filipe Soares and Brazilian winger Pablo Ruan are doubtful.

Benfica (4-2-3-1) Anatoliy Trubin; Amar Dedic, Antonio Silva, Nicolas Otamendi, Samuel Dahl; Enzo Barrenechea, Leandro Barreiro; Fredrik Aursnes, Georgiy Sudakov, Gianluca Prestianni; Vangelis Pavlidis

Alexander Bah, Bruma and Nuno Felix remain out injured. Dodi Lukebakio is expected to be gone for two months following an ankle injury.

Richard Rios is suspended which should see Leandro Barreiro continue in the starting side.

Manu Silva made his long awaited return to action off the bench at Ajax after more than ten months. He was gracious after the appearance and left a message on Instagram:

“I've been waiting for this moment since February 8th! To be able to do what I love most again and culminate my return with the fulfillment of another childhood dream - making my Champions League debut - is something I will never forget. The only feeling that surpasses this immense joy is gratitude.”

Verdict

Benfica regularly beat Nacional and had few problems against the Madeiran club last season. I am expecting another victory for the Eagles in the Primeira Liga.
