Everton and Newcastle meet in the EFL Cup, with a draw recommended as the best bet due to both sides being out of form and unconvincing in recent performances. The article also suggests a 1-1 draw as a possible outcome, reflecting the lack of attacking threat from either team. This tip is based on the current struggles and uncertainty surrounding both Everton and Newcastle, making a stalemate on Merseyside a likely result.

Everton vs Newcastle Preview

Everton will be eager to bounce back at the Hill Dickinson Stadium after consecutive defeats. Newcastle are an inconsistent side and these well-matched teams can draw in the EFL Cup.

Key Stats - Out of Form Sides Clash

  • Everton are winless in their last 3 games.
  • Everton are unbeaten in their last 2 matches against Newcastle.
  • Newcastle are winless in 2 of their last 3 away games.

H2H

Everton have a 78-72 advantage against Newcastle, alongside 38 draws.

Everton Slowing Down After Fast Start

David Moyes’ Everton went unbeaten in their opening eight games of the 2026/27 season. The Toffees beat Preston 4-0 away and Wolves 1-0 at home in the EFL Cup.

Everton’s momentum has slowed since the international break. They are winless in three after a 2-2 draw at Hull and a 2-0 home loss to Chelsea.

The Merseysiders lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season after a 2-0 defeat at Arsenal. The Toffees were second best with 0.63-1.96 XG and conceded once in each half.

Newcastle Are Lacking Momentum

Newcastle looked solid early in the new season and were on a five-match unbeaten run. EFL Cup victories over West Brom 3-2 and Millwall 1-0 came during that streak.

Matthias Jaissle’s side have been less convincing since the Millwall victory, with three losses in five. The Magpies lost 4-1 in consecutive away league games at Leeds and Coventry and were beaten 1-0 at home by Aston Villa.

The Toon hit back and beat Crystal Palace 2-0 away on Sunday. Newcastle allowed 1.59 XG, faced 17 shots and William Osula and Harvey Barnes scored in the second period.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Everton (4-2-3-1): Mark Travers; Ainsley Maitland-Niles, James Tarkowski, Will Keane, Jake O'Brien; Carlos Alcaraz, James Garner; Tyler Dibling, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tyrique George; Thierno Barry

Winger Jack Grealish missed the Arsenal game through illness and defender Jarrad Branthwaite was absent due to concussion. The duo are doubtful for the Newcastle game.

Defender Vitali Mykolenko came off injured at the Emirates and is unlikely to feature. David Moyes was cagey about the extent of Mykolenko’s injury and said he had “no idea” how bad it was.

Newcastle (4-2-3-1): Nick Pope; Amar Dedic, Malick Thiaw, Sven Botman, Lewis Hall; Nico Gonzalez, Joe Willock; Anthony Elanga, Jacob Ramsey, Harvey Barnes; William Osula

Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen is ruled out with a muscle issue and defender Tino Livramento is unavailable due to a knee injury.

Midfielder Lewis Miley and forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo missed the Palace game. Matthias Jaissle issued a pre-match update on the pair and said:

“These two players are still doubtful, there are question marks if they can make it, so we need to see step by step."

Verdict

Everton and Newcastle are out of form and neither side looks convincing. An EFL Cup draw is the best bet on Merseyside.
