Having missed multiple World Cups and European Championships, this win signals a significant achievement for Scotland, who will be among teams competing in the tournament hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA. Scotland have secured a spot at the World Cup for the first time since 1998. They left it late to qualify for the tournament, Steve Clarke's side beating Denmark 4-2 in a dramatic encounter at Hampden Park in Glasgow.

The Scots had to win the match to qualify automatically and were on the brink with the match tied 2-2 with 10 minutes remaining. Kieran Tierney scored in extra time and Kenny McLean made it 4-2 from his own half with seconds to go.

The Tartan Army will now flood to next year's tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States. Scotland's last campaign in 1998 saw them lose to Brazil, Morocco and draw with Norway, exiting in the tournament group stage.

They failed to qualify for six straight World Cups and missed five consecutive European Championships. Scotland finished bottom of their group at Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.

Clarke paid tribute to his team after the match, saying "This was the chance. One game. This was like a play-off final. We put everything on the line."

Scotland will find out their group stage opponents when the draw is made on Friday 5 December.

Bookmakers are not giving the Scots much chance of winning the tournament, pricing them at 250/1 alongside Turkey, Canada, Egypt, Poland and Wales. Spain remain the favourites in a wide open betting market.
