Sporting CP take on Maritimo in the Portuguese League Cup on Tuesday, 27 October 2026. The article tips both teams to score (BTTS), citing Sporting's defensive struggles, with only one clean sheet in their last seven matches, and Maritimo's attacking approach in Lisbon. Sporting are expected to field a rotated side, and both teams have seen BTTS frequently in recent games. The recommendation is based on Sporting's lack of clean sheets and Maritimo's tendency to find the net despite recent defeats.

Sporting and Rui Borges are in crisis mode after successive home defeats. The Lions can’t keep clean sheets and with a second string side starting against Maritimo, BTTS is my best bet.

Key Stats

  • Sporting CP have failed to win in their last 3 home matches.
  • Sporting CP have seen BTTS in 6 of their last 7 matches.
  • Maritimo have lost 5 of their last 7 matches.
  • Maritimo have seen BTTS in 4 of their last 5 matches.

Sporting CP lead Maritimo 74-18 alongside 16 draws. The visitors last won in Lisbon in 2013.

Sporting in Crisis

Sporting went unbeaten in their opening ten games this season which included a five match winning run. They kept only three clean sheets which has come back to bite them.

The Lions have lost their previous two matches, both at home. They suffered a 3-2 defeat against LASK Linz in the Champions League despite Luis Suarez opening the scoring in the 5th minute.

Rui Borges saw his side lost 2-1 against Academico Viseu on Sunday. Suarez equalised in the second half but their poor defence let them down once again.

The manager spoke about the lack of experience in his side: “It's natural that maturity or composure wasn't there. It was part of the game. We were in a good moment and we went for the 2-1.”

“Conceding a goal brought down our confidence and it's natural that the team loses those aspects. We tried, we ran, and we had a lot of play down the flanks.”

“Unfortunately, it wasn't enough. I can't point fingers. They tried their best. They tried to score, we created many chances. It's about working and always believing. There's nothing else to do but work.”

Maritimo Slipping Down the Table

Maritimo had a strong start in Liga Portugal but haven’t won since August, picking up two points in seven games.

Mitchell van der Gaag’s side registered a hard fought 2-1 win at Alcochetense in the Portuguese Cup. Maurice Boakye broke the deadlock and Simo Bouzaidi made it 2-0 from the penalty spot.

The Madeiran club are coming off a heavy 5-0 defeat at Vitoria de Guimaraes. It was 1-0 at half-time with the final score slightly harsh, Maritimo ending with 0.65-1.97 xG.

The Dutch manager was unhappy with the way his side reacted after going 2-0 down: “Until now we've always left a good impression, but today, what I felt after the second goal was that we gave up as a team, which can't happen.”

“Playing against Guimarães at home, struggling, conceding the second goal, we kind of gave up. We'd never done this before. For me, it's worse.”

“Losing 5-0 makes it very clear that we have to improve many aspects; we all knew it wasn't going to be an easy season for us, and that was shown today.”

Predicted Lineups & Team News

Sporting CP (4-2-3-1) Rui Silva; Georgios Vagiannidis, Eduardo Quaresma, Ibrahima Ba, Moncef Zekri; Silas Andersen, Joao Simões; Jesse Derry, Pedro Lima, Flavio Gonçalves; Fotis Ioannidis

Nuno Santos is close to returning from injury and Rodrigo Zalazar remains out due to a muscle injury. Zeno Debast is doubtful. Expect Borges to make wholesale changes here.

Maritimo (4-3-3) Alfonso Pastor; Tomás Tavares, Romain Correia, Rafael Fernandes, Nilton; Raphael Guzzo, Ibrahim Alani; Simo Bouzaidi, Maxime Dominguez, Martín Tejón; Maurice Boakye

Spanish midfielder Yellu Santiago hasn’t played since August and Vladan Danilović is doubtful. Maurice Boakye should replace Adrián Butzke up front.

Verdict

Rui Borges is walking on thin ice but Sporting are simply paying the price for selling their best players. I don’t see the Lions keeping a clean sheet against Maritimo, BTTS my best bet in the League Cup.
