Wolves are tipped to begin their 2026/27 EFL Cup campaign strongly against Port Vale, thanks to impressive pre-season displays and Port Vale’s struggles away from home. Betting recommendations highlight Wolves to win with over 2.5 total goals, with over 3.5 goals also suggested. The outlook is optimistic for a high-scoring home victory, making Wolves a solid pick for punters as the season opens.

Wolves vs Port Vale Preview

Wolves looked comfortable against non-league and League One opposition in pre-season. The Old Gold are likely to control this EFL Cup clash against Port Vale and a one-sided home win is tipped.

Back-to-Back Wolves Wins

  • Wolves have won their last 2 matches.
  • Wolves have seen over 2.5 goals in 2 consecutive home games.
  • Port Vale have lost 6 of their last 10 away matches.

H2H - Wanderers on Top

Wolves have a 29-8 advantage against Port Vale, alongside 11 draws.

Wolves Building Form Ahead of 2026/27

Cesar Peixoto was named as the new Wolves manager after Rob Edwards’ dismisal. The Midlands team were relegated from the Premier League last season and finished bottom.

Wanderers have improved in pre-season under Peixoto and won three of their four friendlies. Wolves beat Maidenhead 1-0, lost 2-1 at home against Real Sociedad and beat Doncaster 2-0.

The Old Gold secured back-to-back wins for the first time since March after defeating Racing Santander 3-0. Fernando Lopez opened the scoring on 18 minutes and Hugo Bueno and Yerson Mosquera struck in the second period.

Port Vale Concede Loads of Away Goals

Port Vale were relegated from League One last season and finished 22nd. The Valiants conceded 36 goals in 23 away games in 2025/26.

The Staffordshire outfit ended last season with a 2-1 win at Stockport and a 2-0 home loss against Lincoln.

The Vale won four pre-season friendlies and started with a commanding 5-0 victory against non-league Tamworth. Victories against Wigan away 3-1 and Murcia at home 1-0 followed.

Jon Brady’s side continued their winning streak with a 1-0 win at Blackpool. Jasper Moon broke the deadlock on 85 minutes to secure the victory.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Wolves (4-2-3-1): Daniel Bentley; Kieran Trippier, Yerson Mosquera, Toti, Hugo Bueno; Andre, Marshall Munetsi; Rodrigo Gomes, Fernando Lopez, Mateus Mane; Adam Armstrong

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone missed pre-season due to a shoulder injury and is unavailable here.

Winger Rafiki Said and midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde will miss the start of the season through injury.

Director of performance at Wolves, Phil Hayward, confirmed Said’s injury in pre-season and said, “He'll be in a brace for the next six weeks or so and he'll have some injections in that time to accelerate the healing process.”

Port Vale (4-4-2): Jackson Smith; Jaheim Headley, Jordan Gabriel, Lewis Montsma, George Byers; Liam Gordon, Rhys Walters, George Hall, Cameron Humphreys; Mo Faal, Max Watters

Attacker Jayden Stockley is ruled out of the Wolves game due to a calf issue.

Verdict

Wolves looked good at both ends in pre-season and Port Vale have a poor record on the road. Wanderers can start the 2026/27 campaign with a high-scoring EFL Cup victory.
