Middlesbrough and Wrexham are set to face off in the opening round of the 2026/27 EFL Cup, both teams struggling for victories in recent games. Given their current form, a draw seems a likely result, with predictions favoring both a generic draw (3.9 odds) and a 1-1 scoreline (7.5 odds). The key recommendation is to back the draw, as neither side appears dominant. The article provides concise betting advice and highlights the lack of convincing form on both sides.

Middlesbrough vs Wrexham Preview

Middlesbrough are on a long winless streak and have drawn a lot recently. Wrexham’s form dropped off towards the end of pre-season and an EFL Cup draw is the best bet.

Key Stats - Boro Draw a Lot

  • Middlesbrough have drawn 5 of their last 7 games.
  • Middlesbrough have drawn 2 consecutive matches
  • Wrexham are winless in 5 of their last 7 matches.

H2H - Recent Draws

Wrexham have a 2-1 advantage against Middlesbrough, alongside two draws.

Middlesbrough Have Struggled for Form

Kim Hellberg Middlesbrough went unbeaten in six of their final seven games of the 2025/26 Championship season and drew four.

Boro drew three matches in a row before losing the Championship play-off final 1-0 against Hull.

The Teesside outfit were winless in their three pre-season friendlies. They started that run with a 1-1 draw at Celtic and a 3-1 home defeat against Huddersfield.

Hellberg’s side drew again on Saturday after a 3-3 home stalemate with Espanyol. Leo Castledine found the net twice and Morgan Whittaker also scored.

Wrexham Are a Patchy Side

Wrexham had an inconsistent pre-season with one draw, two wins and two defeats from five friendlies.

The Welsh side held Polish opponents Wisla to a goalless draw. The Red Dragons then beat Man United 1-0.

Phil Parkinson’s team followed that result with a 3-2 Premier League Summer Series win over Leeds. Wrexham couldn't maintain momentum and lost 1-0 against Liverpool.

Another 1-0 loss against Sunderland followed on Sunday. The Red Dragons conceded just before half time and had just three shots and two on target.

Predicted Starting Lineups & Team News

Middlesbrough (4-2-3-1): Solomon Brynn; Luke Ayling, Callum Brittain, Adilson Malanda, Vivaldo Borges; Aidan Morris, Sebastian Berhalter; Jeremy Sarmiento, Leo Castledine, Morgan Whittaker; Will Lankshear

Defender Alex Bangura and attacker Tommy Conway are sidelined due to injury.

Striker David Strelec and midfielder Myles Peart-Harris missed the Espanyol game with injuries.

Hellberg was confident the duo would recover for the Wrexham game and said, “They should be back soon. But they were not ready to play in this game. It shouldn’t be too long though, they should be back again soon.”

Wrexham (3-4-2-1): Arthur Okonkwo; Libby Cacace, Dominic Hyam, Callum Doyle; Danny Imray, Matty James, George Thomason, Zak Vyner; Nathan Broadhead, Josh Windass; Kieffer Moore

Defender Seb Revan is unavailable due to a hamstring issue.

Verdict

Middlesbrough and Wrexham haven’t won many games lately and neither side is in convincing form. These sides can start 2026/27 with an EFL Cup draw.
