Spain demonstrated a commanding performance against Serbia, securing a convincing win and showcasing their experience. Spain looks set to secure another victory, while Austria faces growing pressure after five consecutive losses. Spain's solid form could lead to them covering a –2.5 handicap. With Austria's struggles in the group intensifying, Spain's efficiency and composure could shine through once more.

Match Preview

Austria failed to impress in their tournament opener and arrive under massive pressure knowing another defeat would end their European Championship campaign. Spain looked composed and experienced in Round 1, and with Austria struggling badly in recent weeks, backing La Roja to win and cover a –2.5 handicap looks like the right call.

Austria Running Out of Chances

Austria struggled heavily with efficiency in the first half of their European Championship 2026 opener against Germany, falling behind early and never quite recovering in a 30-27 defeat. Sebastian Frimmel did everything he could to keep them competitive, finishing as top scorer with nine goals.

That loss leaves Austria in a must-win situation, as another defeat would mathematically eliminate them from the tournament. The pressure is firmly on, and recent performances suggest they may not be equipped to handle it.

Their problems were already visible in January friendlies, where they lost all three matches against strong opposition. Narrow defeats to the Czech Republic (30-29) were followed by clearer losses to France (34-29) and Slovenia (36-31), exposing defensive issues and a lack of depth.

Spain Leaning on Experience

Spain delivered a professional performance in their opening match, controlling the tempo throughout a 29-27 victory against Serbia. Ian Tarrafeta led the way with six goals, while La Roja showed maturity in managing the game during key moments.

This is Spain’s 17th appearance at the European Championship, and experience remains one of their biggest weapons. They lifted the trophy in both 2018 and 2020, and while this squad is in transition, the winning mentality is still very much present.

Preparation results earlier this month were mixed, with convincing wins over Slovakia (43-26) and Tunisia (37-28), followed by a narrow 34-31 loss to Portugal. Still, Spain looked far sharper than Austria when it mattered most in Round 1.

Verdict

Austria have now lost five consecutive matches and are facing elimination pressure in a brutal group. Spain looked solid, composed, and efficient against Serbia, and their experience should shine through once again. I’m backing La Roja to secure a second straight victory and cover a –2.5 handicap.
