Denmark has significantly raised their performance standards since their earlier defeat against Portugal. Concluding the Main Round with four straight victories, they demonstrated their strength by decisively defeating Norway 38-24. This remarkable form sets them up as strong favorites against Iceland in their upcoming match on Friday. A commanding win for the Danes seems imminent as they continue their quest for success.

Match Preview

The early loss to Portugal proved to be a major wake-up call for Denmark, who have stepped up impressively since, claiming four straight wins in the Main Round. Iceland have enjoyed an excellent run so far, but I expect it to end on Friday, as it’s hard to see them seriously contesting the red-hot hosts in this semifinal.

Denmark Peaking at the Right Time

Denmark’s performances at the European Championship 2026 have not always been convincing, but they remain the number one candidates to go all the way and claim the gold medal in front of the home crowd.

After a shaky group stage where they lost to Portugal and carried over zero points into the Main Round, the Danes were immediately tested by France. They trailed for most of that clash but were carried by Mathias Gidsel to a crucial 32-29 victory.

From there, Denmark raised their level significantly, outplaying Spain 36-31, Germany 31-26 and most recently crushing Norway 38-24 to secure a semifinal spot as the top-ranked team in Group 1.

Iceland Enjoying a Dream Run

Iceland have been the most pleasant surprise of the tournament so far, pulling off several major upsets to secure a place in the semifinals.

They were flawless in the group stage, carrying over two points to the Main Round after three straight wins against Italy 39-26, Poland 31-23 and Hungary 24-23, boasting the best defensive numbers at that stage of the competition.

Their Main Round opener was a narrow 30-29 defeat to Croatia, but they revived their semifinal hopes in spectacular fashion by upsetting Sweden 35-27. A dramatic 38-38 draw against Switzerland followed, before sealing second place in Group 2 with a convincing 39-31 win over Slovenia. Omar Ingi Magnusson has been their standout performer, scoring 37 goals from 51 attempts.

Verdict

Denmark have clearly lifted their level since the loss to Portugal, finishing the Main Round with four consecutive victories and underlining their dominance by crushing Norway 38-24. I don’t see them facing serious difficulties against Iceland on Friday, with a convincing win for the Danes firmly on the cards.
